Elijah Shumate has added his name to the list of committed players for Notre Dame in the Class of 2012. offers its first take on the newest member of the team's class.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly continues to add top big-time prospects to the class of 2012 as National Signing Day fast approaches with the addition of Elijah Shumate during Saturday's U.S. Army All-American game.

A four-star safety prospect out of New Jersey powerhouse Don Bosco Prep, Shumate fits the mold Kelly looks for as a versatile, multiple-position prospect.


With great physical size at 6-foot-1, 205-pounds, Shumate has great speed and comes from a tested high level program. In high school Shumate has played outside linebacker, strong safety and running back.


Where will Shumate play once he gets to Notre Dame? This may be a question not answered until camp opens as Shumate could get a serious look at running back. However, right now we'd have to project him as a safety.


The Irish get a top level prospect out of New Jersey who can play multiple positions in college. If Shumate stays on defense, Irish fans will love his willingness and ability to hit like a linebacker while still being able to get hip turn as a safety. Top Stories
