IE Breakdown: Sheldon Day

Already on campus at Notre Dame, Sheldon Day can expect to see the field early in his career. Here is our breakdown of the Indianapolis native.

HT – WT – SPEED : At 6-foot-2, 280-pounds Sheldon Day may not have the height Brian Kelly has recruited since taking over the Irish program. However, Day makes up for the lack of height as being fast off the line and coming down the line.

QUICKNESS – AGILITY – BALANCE : This is where Day excels as he uses his these three areas to win battles on the edge or inside. Without these abilities Day would be an average player. However, with his quickness off the line and his ability to keep his balance, he's one of the top defenders in the class of 2012.

BODY FLEXIBILITY : Shows great natural flexibility and the ability to adjust his body to make football plays in the trenches.

STRENGTH : Because of his body type Day is compact and bull strong. Unlike taller players, Day does not have the problems of coming in needed to build strength in the upper body. Again, we don't just look at brute strength as a player must have the recoil ability in the lower and upper body to have success at a high level. Day has both allowing him the chance to play early in his career.

PRODUCTION : There is no mistaking the impact Day had at the high school level using his explosiveness against lower level competition. Nevertheless, because of his height some may feel he'll struggle at the next level. I've watched other players of Day's explosiveness excel by hitting gaps hard and fast beating bigger and slower offensive linemen to a spot. Kelly had a player in his past Terrill Byrd who lacked Day's height but played with the same quick first step and power. .

If used the right way, Sheldon Day can give offensive linemen fits with his quickness and explosive abilities. While most look at height along both sides of the line, consider Day a speed player in a lineman's body. Day is strong and plays with a high motor, both are key ingredients when battling in the trenches.

Irish fans should be excited about the game Day brings with him to Notre Dame. As an early enrollee, Day will have several months in the Irish strength program to help reshape his body in some areas and be ready to explode on the scene in the spring. The advantages of Day's ability to play inside or outside give the Irish even more flexibility at a position of strength. Top Stories
