IE Breakdown: John Turner

We offer grades and a review of Notre Dame safety prospect John Turner who will join Brian Kelly's Irish on National Signing Day.

HT – WT – SPEED : At 6-foot-1, 200-pounds John Turner will enter Notre Dame with great physical size. However, some question if he'll be too big to be a safety and could move to outside linebacker before his career is over. Has reported the ability to run in the mid 4.5s in the forty.

QUICKNESS – AGILITY – BALANCE : In watching Turner in person I found a player playing out of position as a corner. Because of this he showed well in all three areas but was not exceptional.

BODY FLEXIBILITY : During the game and film I've watched there is some work needed in making Turner more flexible. If he's to stay at safety he'll need to get better in this area to help him in the hip area. I fully expect Paul Longo to be able to deliver here.

STRENGTH : Because of his physical size Turner has some natural strength to work with. He shows a nice recoil in the upper and lower body.

PRODUCTION : A safety or outside linebacker in college, Turner has played corner and safety in high school. By no means was Turner a shutdown corner, however, he was a solid in supporting the run and in coverage.

Turner is solid on the field showing the ability to play the run and cover when given a good cushion. If he can stay at safety he'll give the Irish a strong run stopper. He shows the ability to make pre snap reads and make the required adjustments to be in the right spot and has solid instincts. He'll struggle with mirroring quick smaller receivers as he needs to continue working on flipping his hips, turning and running with receivers coming out of his back pedal. Turner has good range and is solid with a quick burst to make up ground. His major strength is in his ability to finish off plays as he is a physical tackler.

You have to give Turner all the credit in the world as he camped with the Irish and earned his offer. This means he not only passed the test on the field, he also passed the watchful eyes of Irish head strength coach Paul Longo. The Irish will have time to mold Turner into the player they feel he can be in the future. The biggest question will be if Turner can stay at safety or will a move to linebacker be in his future.
