All Irish: Gunner Kiel continues its signing day coverage with a profile of the class's highest-rated player

Gunner Kiel (Quarterback – 6'4" 200 pounds):'s top-rated quarterback prospect made a surprise switch from LSU to the Irish, enrolling at Notre Dame at the outset of the spring semester…In addition to his passing skills, Kiel appears to have the oft-referenced ability to "extend plays" with his feet and overall athleticism, the key ingredient to Brian Kelly's read-option, shotgun spread offense…Like fellow five-star early enrollee Tee Shepard, Kiel enters the program at a position of need, though Kiel will be hard-pressed to beat out a well-tiered trio of signal-callers as a true freshman…Initially pledged his commitment to home-state underdog, Indiana.

Kelly Recruiting Profile: Skill

*Veterans returning at quarterback: Junior Tommy Rees; Redshirt-sophomore Andrew Hendrix; Redshirt-freshman Everett Golson (*denotes eligibility entering 2012)

Fellow incoming quarterback prospects: None (as of 7:00 AM today)

Berk on Kiel: Look for Kiel to come right in and compete early for playing time as he's got the skills needed to run Brian Kelly's offense. Can make all the throws and has shown good field vision and decision-making during his prep career. Will get physically stronger and that should help his arm strength go from solid to great.

Dohn on Kiel: One thing the 2011 season proved is Notre Dame's quarterback situation was unsettled. Kiel has a strong arm, good feet and makes good decisions. He could be the quarterback for the next four seasons.
