IrishEyes.com begins its signing day coverage with a profile of one of the class's top defensive prospects.
Tee Shepard (Cornerback – 6'0" 172 pounds):
The class's first verbal pledge wavered a bit since first announcing his intentions in early March 2011, but Shepard ended his well-publicized recruiting saga as a January enrollee at the University…Scout.com's No. 3 rated cornerback enters the college ranks with the requisite height and athleticism coveted by head coach Brian Kelly and the defensive staff to compete with modern-era passing games and wide receivers…The eight months between today and Notre Dame
's opener in Dublin will be crucial to his physical development and subsequent playing time as Shepard likely needs a few to 10 pounds of muscle to hold up in run support as a true frosh.
Kelly Recruiting Profile: Skill
*Veterans returning at Cornerback: Juniors Bennett Jackson and Lo Wood; sophomore Josh Atkinson; redshirt-freshman Jalen Brown (*denotes eligibility entering 2012)
Fellow incoming cornerback prospects: None (as of 7:00 AM today)
Berk on Shepard: Despite missing his senior season, Shepard is one of the top corner prospects in the country and the Irish will need him to use his early time on campus to fight for time in the starting rotation early. Great pure athlete with size who has the ability be a lockdown corner at Notre Dame.
Dohn on Shepard: He didn't play as a senior but dominated in the secondary in two all-star games. He has great speed, tremendous cover skills, can close ground and has good hands. As an early enrollee, he should be able to jump into significant action as a freshman.
