IE Breakdown: Elijah Shumate

A detailed breakdown of Ramsey (NJ) Don Bosco Prep safety Elijah Shumate.

HT – WT – SPEED : At 6-foot-1, 205-pounds Elijah Shumate has the size and speed to play a couple of different positions at the college level.

QUICKNESS – AGILITY – BALANCE : Shumate has great balance and agility for a player of his physical build. However, what really sets him apart is his quickness which he uses to close on offensive players to make big plays.

BODY FLEXIBILITY : On film you can see Shumate has great flexibility that is natural. Because of this ability he's able to project as a safety and not just an outside linebacker.

STRENGTH : When you combine the physical size and body flexibility you get a player with natural recoil abilities. Once he gets in the Irish strength program Shumate will add a few pounds without losing these abilities giving him great explosiveness.

PRODUCTION : Shumate could play on either side of the ball but looks destined for the Irish defense. Playing for one of the top prep programs in the country with other top teammates may not have given him the stats some look for. Nevertheless, he's a very productive player capable of making plays within a scheme or from his own ability and efforts.

On film you have to love the willingness of Shumate to come up and destroy offensive players. If he plays safety for the Irish he'll bring the mentality of a linebacker to the position. Has great closing speed and is a sure tackler. However, he will need to get better in coverage. This should be easy to overcome with more reps in the coming months as he shows great hip turn.

Getting Shumate away from his home state is a huge recruiting win for the Irish. Shumate brings a lot of skill to the Irish and should be expected to see the field early at least on special teams. In the Irish 3-4 defensive scheme Shumate fits perfectly at the safety position. Top Stories
