IrishEyes.com continues its signing day coverage with a look at a perimeter defender who'll likely aid Bob Diaco's unit at multiple positions during his Irish career.
Elijah Shumate (Safety/OLB – 6'1" 205 pounds):
The Dog/Drop linebacker position evolved last fall at Notre Dame
with safety Jamoris Slaughter
performing the lion's share of the work over the seasons final eight contests. Shumate's size/speed ratio, his innate aggressiveness and experience at the position (he played OLB often for Don Bosco Prep) all point to a future in the challenging role…However, Notre Dame's lack of depth at safety suggests the four-star prospect could indeed move to the two-deep this season and play along the defensive back line as well…The only certainty regarding Shumate is he'll be asked to perform a variety of duties as a hybrid OLB/S over the next four seasons…Look for Shumate to earn a monogram as a special teams player for Brian Kelly next fall.
Kelly Recruiting Profile: Big Skill
*Veterans returning at Safety: 5th-year Jamoris Slaughter; senior Zeke Motta; junior Austin Collinsworth; redshirt-freshmen Chris Badger (2010 class) and Eilar Hardy. Potential 5th-year senior Dan McCarthy could return to the Irish for 2012 as well.
*Veterans returning at Dog LB: 5th-year safety Jamoris Slaughter; Juniors Prince Shembo and Danny Spond; sophomore Troy Niklas; redshirt-freshman Ben Councell.
(*Denotes eligibility entering 2012)
Fellow incoming safety prospects: Nick Baratti, John Turner, and C.J. Prosise
Berk on Shumate: Physical player with the ability to play safety or outside linebacker. Has great closing speed with great hip rotation and is not afraid to mix it up. Comes from a top prep program and should be expected to compete early in his career.
Dohn on Shumate: Shumate has the size to play outside linebacker but he will enter Notre Dame as a safety. He can be a big hitter and his physically ready to play. He runs well and is athletic, but needs to pick up the defense quickly.
