IrishEyes.com continues its signing day coverage with a look at one of two in-state defenders joining Notre Dame in 2012
John Turner (Safety – 6'1" 200 pounds):
Scout.com's 49th-ranked safety prospect hasn't received much love as an out-of-position cornerback from recruiting analysts since his late-June commitment to the Irish…Possesses the type of frame and skill set head coach Brian Kelly covets in a developmental Big Skill athlete…Look for Turner to challenge for a kick and punt coverage roles next August and a (blocking) spot on the sure-to-be revamped punt return unit…Competitive desire, the ability to diagnose and play full-speed, and a penchant for the physical would immediately endear him to the defensive staff…An intriguing Dog LB prospect in the coming years though he's unlikely to earn a scrimmage role among the Irish two-deep as a true freshman next fall.
Kelly Recruiting Profile: Big Skill
*Veterans returning at Safety: 5th-year Jamoris Slaughter; senior Zeke Motta; junior Austin Collinsworth; redshirt-freshmen Chris Badger (2010 class) and Eilar Hardy. Potential 5th-year senior Dan McCarthy could return to the Irish for 2012 as well.
*Veterans returning at Dog LB: 5th-year safety Jamoris Slaughter; Juniors Prince Shembo and Danny Spond; sophomore Troy Niklas; redshirt-freshman Ben Councell.
(*denotes eligibility entering 2012)
Fellow incoming safety prospects: Nick Baratti, Elijah Shumate, and C.J. Prosise
Berk on Turner: Having seen Turner play in high school left some questions as to the level he'll be able to reach in college. However, for the most part he played out of position causing some of his match-up problems. Possessing a true safety's body, Turner has the speed to play the position but needs to work on flipping his hips and being more flexible. Should be a solid special team's player early in his career.
Dohn on Turner: The Irish needed to add depth to its secondary, and Turner does it. There is a chance he can move to linebacker if his frame fills out and his flexibility doesn't improve, but he is entering as a safety.
