IrishEyes.com continues its signing day coverage with a look at the class's top perimeter pass-rushing prospect.
Romeo Okwara (DE/OLB – 6'4 ½" 225 pounds):
Slated for Scout Team duties as he grows into a defensive end (even/4-3 fronts) or Cat LB (odd/3-4) prospect for Bob Diaco...Speed off the edge and a frame that could house 40 more pounds without a major loss in quickness and athleticism makes the three-star Okwara a potentially undervalued pass-rushing prospect...Okwara will need a better (lower) pad level to excel in the college ranks and he'll become a more physical player at the point with age/experience...Unless he's an absolute beast on special teams it'd behoove the still 16-year-old high school senior to spend a season on the sidelines and under the guidance of strength & conditioning coach, Paul Longo.
Kelly Recruiting Profile: Big Skill
*Veterans returning at DE: 5th-year senior Kapron Lewis-Moore; junior Prince Shembo; sophomores Aaron Lynch, Chase Hounshell, and Stephon Tuitt
*Veterans returning at CAT LB: Junior Prince Shembo (projected move from Dog), sophomore Ishaq Williams, sophomore Troy Niklas (projected move from Dog)
(*denotes eligibility entering 2012)
Fellow incoming DE/OLB prospects: None
Berk on Okwara: Long framed player who fits the mold the Irish have targeted since Kelly took over the program. Brings size and speed to the field and should have the time to develop in his first season on campus. An underrated prospect with tremendous upside.
Dohn on Okwara: "Raw" is the world that comes to mind with the North Carolina prospect. He is very athletic and played well off the edge as a senior, but his technique needs to be refined. How quick he takes to the coaching will determine when he gets on the field.
