Barnwell, who is being recruited to play cornerback, said he spoke with Irish coach Brian Kelly about the offer and is highly excited about it.
"I know it's a great school," the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Barnwell said. "They're always on t.v. with every game they play. They really care about education. That's big for them, and they always have a great reputation."
Barnwell made a visit to South Bend, Ind., in October and was told he would be getting an offer from the Irish. He said he deals with Kelly when it comes to his recruitment.
"He likes the fact I play corner and I'm very physical," Barnwell said. "He likes that I like to hit and that education is important to me."
Barwell also holds offers from North Carolina, Florida, Rutgers, South Carolina, and Georgia, but he is uncertain which visits he will make this spring, sans Rutgers, which is 10 minutes from his high school.
Although most schools are recruiting him to play cornerback, a few, including Florida and Rutgers, are also looking at him as a receiver. He plays quarterback at Piscataway, but has no preference on where he would like to play.
He also said the coaching change at nearby Rutgers hasn't impacted his decision, and he talked to Scarlet Knights coach Kyle Flood on Thursday.
"I'm waiting to see how the season is going to be, and how the new coaching staff handles everything," Barnwell said. "I never stopped liking Rutgers. I just want to see how they do."
Barnwell added he planned to make his decision after the 2012 season.
