IE Quick Take: Davonte' Neal

20 days after signing day Notre Dame, added Davonte' Neal to the class of 2012.'s Dave Berk offers his first take on the future Notre Dame athlete.

The dust HS settled after the unexpected circus surrounding Davonte' Neal official announcement that he'd joinNotre Dame's 2012 recruiting class. While there are questions about the day's events that remain unanswered, Irish fans cannot lose focus on the fact their team had added one of the top players in the country.

Neal, who many consider as one of the best pure athletes in the 2012 class, could fill several roles during his Irish career.

Here is a quick look at the four-star cornerback (#5 overall) out of Scottsdale, Arizona.

There is no mistaking the athletic talent possessed by Neal and how much Brian Kelly needs a big-time playmaker on special teams and on offense if the Irish staff decides to play him on that side of the ball. No matter what side of the ball Neal takes, he's got the skill set to be one of the top players on the team from the day he steps on campus.

The past few months have seen Neal's recruitment take several different turns. Rumors have followed both the player and his father (Luke Neal) during the past few months. Truth and rumor is only known by those closest to each.

Was the morning circus a sign of things to come?

Did Kelly and the Irish bite off more than they should have?

Those questions will only be answered in time.

Davonte' Neal was going to sign with a school no matter what happened Tuesday morning. The Irish are getting a player with the skill set to be a top receiver or defensive back along with a talent capable of breathing life into the dormant Irish return game.

Kelly and his staff needed to take Neal if the player wanted to sign with the Irish. If there proves to be issues in the future, Kelly has shown in the past he's capable of keeping a player on track to get the job done. Top Stories
