Berk's Breakdown: Keeon Johnson

IrishEyes.com recruiting analyst Dave Berk gives a quick breakdown of recent junior day visitor Keeon Johnson from Kannapolis, North Carolina.

Prospect: Keeon Johnson
Position: Wide Receiver
Height/Weight: 6-foot-3 | 195-pounds
High School: Kannapolis (NC) A L Brown HS

Offers To Date: Notre Dame, Duke, East Carolina, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Virginia, Wake Forest.

Strengths

Big physical receiver who causes match-up problems for defensive backs with his ability to use his body. Does a great job of pushing receivers down the field only to quick stop a cut leaving him wide open. Shows the ability to hand catch the ball while also being able to cradle the ball into his body when necessary.

Weakness

Johnson needs a bit of work on his initial steps off the line of scrimmage. At this time he's such a match-up problem for lower level defenders it's not crucial to his performance. However, once he reaches the next level he'll need this skill to elude defenders to beat press coverage.

Overall

With his combination of physical size and speed, Johnson is one of the best prospects I've seen on film. (Keep in mind the film I viewed was from his sophomore year and not this past season.) However, you can see the skill set the Irish like out of the North Carolina native. I really like how he adjusts his body and extends for the ball.

Early Thoughts

Getting Johnson on campus early for a visit and giving him ample time to really look at all the things Notre Dame has to offer will prove to be a key ingredient in getting this top prospect away from programs closer to home. Mike Elston has proven effective in getting players out of North Carolina the past two seasons and he'll have his work cut out for him in getting this top prospect.

Note: Check out Johnson's highlight video in an ensuing post.
