Irish Eyes caught up with Andre Brown, the star tailback from Junius H. Rose HS in Greenville, NC to find out how recruiting is going so far. The 6'2, 211lb TB finished last season with 2298 yards rushing on 213 carries (10.8 yards per carry), with 17TDs, 21 receptions for 409 yards (19.5 yards per rec.) and 3 TDs. With his knack for catching the ball out of the backfield, and his good size, many scouts predict him as a WR on the college level. He has an impressive list of schools recruiting him, and the Irish are one of them. Have they offered yet?
"Well, right now I have offers from North Carolina, North Carolina State, Virginia, Duke, Maryland, and Nebraska," said Brown. "I'm also hearing from Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech Virginia Tech and Notre Dame," he continued. "The ten I'm really looking at are Florida State, Virginia, Notre Dame, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Auburn, Maryland, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and North Carolina State."
June is the month that many recruits choose to attend various football camps around the nation to showcase their talent. Has Brown decided to do the same? "Yes, I went to North Carolina State's one day camp, and I'm going to North Carolina's camp too. I want to go to Notre Dame's camp, but I don't know if I'll be able to make it. I really want to make that trip though."
With such a big list of schools recruiting Brown, what will make one school stick out from the others? "Honestly, I'm looking at the graduation rates of the black athletes at the schools that are recruiting me. I'm looking at that first. That's very important to me even though a lot of people overlook this. I also want to find a school where I fit in with the players and coaching staff. Team Chemistry is really important."
What about distance? "No, distance will not play a role in my decision. I want to get out of North Carolina. It's not that I don't like it here, it's just that I want to get out and see the world. I want to see different places, and do different things. I'm going to take all five of my [official] visits and enjoy the different experiences. Then I'll make my decision."
Comments: Brown told me that he's really enjoying the recruiting process "but not the calls." He was nice enough to talk to me anyway. Honestly, I don't know who is leading, and if there is a leader at all. I do know that he has interest in Notre Dame, and wants to get to the camp in South Bend this month. If he is able to make it, and if he does secure an offer, look for Notre Dame to be one of the schools getting an official visit from Brown in the fall. He certainly seems to be the type of versatile player (TB, or WR) that Ty and Co. like to recruit.
