Ferns on Irish fast track

While he's just putting the finishing touches on his sophomore year at St. Clairsville (Ohio) High School, 2014 linebacker Michael Ferns is on the fast track with Notre Dame, already holding an offer. Ferns talks more about his interest in the Irish.

Surprised, shocked, exited...just a few of the words that best describe the thoughts of high school sophomore Michael Ferns of St. Clairsville (Ohio) High School after he received an offer from Notre Dame.

At 6-foot-3, 235-pounds, Ferns, a multi-position player did not expect such early attention but is excited about its possibilities.

"I was not expecting any of this to happen as soon as it did," said Ferns. "I didn't expect getting an offer from Notre Dame based on just a highlight film and my transcripts. To get an offer like that, I expected to have to at least go visit the campus and go to a camp. So it was pretty exciting that it happened the way it did."

As Irisheyes.com noted in a previous story, Ferns is an impressive player on film playing multiple positions. Notre Dame made sure to get off on the right foot when they offered.

"Coach (Harry) Hiestand asked me if I preferred offense or defense," said Ferns. "I told him I have no preference one way or the other as long as I had an opportunity to play. So no position was brought up but I think their looking at tight end or linebacker."

Hiestand left a lasting impression on the young athlete who hails from the border of Ohio and West Virginia.

"Coach Hiestand is a great guy and is great to talk to," said Ferns. "When he visited he came over to watch a track meet for a little bit before leaving for more recruiting. But my first impressions of him were great and I expect to take a visit as soon as possible."

How soon could Ferns be on campus in South Bend?

"It's probably going to be sometime in June, mid-June," said Ferns. "Last year I went to the state track championships as part of our relay team and we have the same team this year. So we expect to go back this year. That will be on June 2nd and 3rd so it will be sometime after that."
