5 For Irish in Ohio?

Brian Kelly has shown the ability to recruit Ohio and pull out some top talent since taking over at Notre Dame. We spotlight five (Class of 2014) prospects the Irish will be taking hard looks at in the coming months.

Notre Dame has signed ten top high school prospects out of Ohio since Brian Kelly took over the Irish program. With two more natives of the Buckeye state already pledged to the Irish, I thought it was time to profile five targets the Irish have yet to offer from the state in the 2014 class.

St. Clairsville (OH) middle linebacker Michael Ferns already holds an offer from the Irish. Ferns is quickly adding offers from across the country and several other prospects from the state are getting serious looks. Here are five names to remember.

OT: Jimmy Byrne – Cleveland (OH) St. Ignatius High School

Byrne, who stands 6-foot-5, 275-pounds, comes from one of the top prep programs in the state and has already picked up a verbal offer from Ohio State. While Ohio State and Michigan look like two programs the Irish would have to battle, Byrne knows a degree from Notre Dame will do wonders for him down the road. Still raw as a player, Byrne will need to attend camp this summer to shore up an offer.

DE/DT: Ryan Stout – Sylvania (OH) Southview High School

Stout is a name many will be talking about in the coming months as he heads off to camps. At 6-foot-5, 245-pounds, Stout has the frame and athletic ability the Irish will look at for the 2014 recruiting class. Stout is a major BCS prospect.

CB: Alonzo Saxton – Columbus (OH) Bishop Hartley High School

The Irish will have several strong ties to Saxton when it's his turn to announce his pledge. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound corner is great friends with Eilar Hardy and high school teammate Jacob Matuska is already a pledge for the 2013 class. A true cover corner, Saxton is one of the best in the state and has already pulled down offers from Wisconsin, Purdue, Illinois and Toledo.

WR: Travon Hudson – Cincinnati (OH) Colerain High School

Standing 6-foot-4, 200-pounds, Hudson is one if the state's best pure athletes for 2014 and he'll be a hard one to pull out of Ohio if the Irish offer. With current Irish linebacker Jarrett Grace being a tie between the two programs, the Irish failing to offer 2012 linebacker Joe Bolden (Michigan) and new Ohio State defensive back coach Kerry Coombs (former Kelly assistant and Colerain HC) gives Hudson plenty of options. Colerain use to be a nice feeder school for Michigan out of Southwest Ohio and it could come into play with Hudson.

WR: Derek Kief – Cincinnati (OH) LaSalle High School

If the Irish miss on Hudson they could look just down the road at LaSalle High School at Kief who has the build the Irish love to see in their wide receivers at 6-foot-5, 185-pounds. Kelly built some solid ties during his time in Cincinnati with the LaSalle program and could look to use them if the Irish go after Kief.

There are several other names to remember in the 2014 class out of Ohio to remember. However, we wanted to give you five names we feel have honest shots of getting serious looks from the Irish.
