What's Next for Nation's Top OLB?

Bishop Luers High (Fort Wayne, Ind.) five-star outside linebacker Jaylon Smith visited Notre Dame on May 12, and plans to visit another school in the coming weeks. Smith spoke with IrishEyes.com about his latest visit, where he plans to go next, and whether a decision is coming soon.

While there has been talk the nation's No. 1 outside linebacker could announce his college decision in the coming weeks, he said Monday afternoon he was eyeing a late summer decision.

Bishop Luers High (Fort Wayne, Ind.) five-star Jaylon Smith will be at combine/7-on-7 events the next two weekends, and will likely mix in a visit to Ohio State after he visited Notre Dame on May 12.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Smith is also listing Purdue and Indiana in his final four, but he said he was not close to making a decision.

"I think we're going to be going to Ohio State within the next two weeks, and then nothing really else," Smith said. "Right now I'm looking at August. I'm not in any rush. I'm really trying to make sure I make the right decision. Whenever I feel like pulling the trigger, than I will do it.

"I just want to get it out of the way so I can focus on one school, so I can enjoy my senior year."

One thing working in Smith's favor is how much his recruitment has calmed down.

"It's really settling down," he said. "I'm still trying to pick out some things between schools, and figuring out what I like."

Smith's most recent trip to Notre Dame was so his father, Roger, could see the campus. With a brother, Rod, already at Ohio State, the family knows the Columbus, Ohio, campus well.

"The trip was just to show my dad," Smith said. "He had never been up there before, and obviously I wanted to get him input. Ultimately, it's my decision where I go, but he's seen Columbus. It was about bringing him up to Notre Dame to see what kind of environment that was there."

Smith added his dad had a good time meeting with the coaching staff and touring the campus.

"He really liked how close everybody was and how it was a family there," Smith said. "He said how close they all were."

Smith finished his last day of his junior year Monday, and is now focusing on combine/camp events and his recruitment.

"I'm excited to be out of school and getting ready for these camps," Smith said. "I'll be at the IMG Camp (in Michigan) this weekend for a 7-on-7 and next week. We're hosting our own camp June 2."
