At 6'3, 300lbs, Rob Crudup is anything but plain. He cannot walk around Plainfield, NJ without being noticed. Apparently, he won't be going through his senior football season without being noticed too. In his junior season, Crudup recorded 35 pancake blocks, and graded out at 90%. Crudup went to the University of Virginia's football camp and put on a show. His performance earned him Top Lineman of the camp, and colleges have taken notice.
"Right now, I'm looking mainly at Virginia, Rutgers, Iowa, Michigan State and Kentucky" Crudup said. "They are the teams that have been recruiting me the hardest. I have also been getting letters from Wisconsin, Syracuse, Vanderbilt and Notre Dame," Crudup continued.
Why is Notre Dame so far down on his list? "Notre Dame is recruiting me, but not as hard as other teams. I get handwritten letters from them, but they haven't been in contact with me over the phone or in person. I like Notre Dame, but they just aren't recruiting me hard."
Most of the recruits I talk to have played the game since they were young kids. They have always had a love for the game, and have been getting exposure since they were in Pop Warner leagues. Not Crudup. Crudup's first year playing football was in 2000. "I never took football serious. I didn't start playing football until I was in the ninth grade. I was a big guy, so I just decided I would play" said Crudup. Pretty good decision since it will probably lead to a free college education, and perhaps more.
With such a big decision ahead of him, many would think that Crudup would be feeling a lot of stress and pressure. Besides the constant stressful calls from coaches, and recruiting services, Crudup will be making one of the biggest decisions of his life. Is he starting to feel the pressure? "Honestly, I'm not really taking it that serious just yet. I try not to think about it. One school will stand out from the others. I'm just going to wait it out and see what's out there. Out of the schools that are recruiting me, I'll choose the school that I feel most comfortable with the players, and coaches. I'm going to take my visits, and they will determine where I'll go to school."
Comments: Obviously not one of Notre Dame's top OL targets but they are recruiting him. Since recruiting really isn't that important to Crudup at this point, the fact that Notre Dame isn't high on him really doesn't matter to him anyway. I love his nonchalant attitude toward recruiting. Since football is relatively new to him, he's just sitting back and enjoying the game. Irisheyes will check back in on Crudup during his football season to see if things change.
