Alonzo Middleton, the impressive looking 6'3, 230lb Linebacker from Wilkinson HS (Orangeburg, SC) is a name that many Irish fans aren't familiar with presently. Last season, Middleton only played 4 games before having his knee scoped after sustaining an injury. "My season was cut short last year. I had some bad breaks. After I was injured, I was misdiagnosed, and was given the wrong therapy treatment. It kept me out a lot longer than I expected. I finished the season with 32 tackles, and 1 fumble recovery through 4 games. I'll be back strong this year" Middleton said.
Middleton said he was happy with his performance at Notre Dame's camp and the overall experience. "I think I did pretty good on the field. I was pretty impressed with the campus, and the school overall. The trip up was brutal though. It took us about 13 hours to get there. Once we got through the mountains, it was pretty cool though. It was well worth it though. I'm glad I went" Middleton said.
Did Middleton get a chance to talk to Coach Tyrone Willingham? "Yea, I spoke with him for a minute. He was a real cool guy. Really busy though. He was always on the go. It was nice to talk to him though."
With a pretty good performance at camp, did Middleton receive an offer? "No, they didn't offer me. But I'm not discouraged. I'm going to send them some game film so they can see me in action. Hopefully, after that, and maybe watching me some this season, they'll offer me then."
Middleton has offers from Clemson, South Carolina, and East Carolina. He's also hearing from North Carolina and Georgia.
What will be the major factors in Middleton's deciding on a school? "I want to go to a school with a tradition of academic and athletic greatness. I take my education very seriously so that will be the main thing. But I want to find a place with a good balance of both." Middleton boasts a 3.8 GPA, and has scored a 960 on his SAT which he plans to take again.
It's good to know that Middleton is not giving up on Notre Dame even though he was not offered. It's obvious that he's very interested in the Irish since he's going out of his way to send in additional video of himself for the staff to review. "I want to show them that I'm a player. Hopefully, I'll be able to officially visit Notre Dame again. That's if everything works out."
I hope his perseverance pays off.
Comments: Middleton really likes Notre Dame. I think it's a good fit for him in his eyes. Last season's short year hurt him, but he's working hard, and doesn't make excuses for himself. Even though he got back in late last night, he still got up today to go to his teams 7 on 7 passing tournament this morning. There's nothing like a dedicated young man. Seems like Ty's type of player.
