For the past week, IrishEyes has been trying to catch up with Adam Speer, the All-star offensive lineman from Chaminade College Prep (Westlake, CA). Yesterday, I was finally able to get a hold of him. "Yea I've been really busy lately" Speer said with a mouth full of hamburger when I told him how I've been trying to reach him.
As most Irish recruiting junkies know, Speer was a recent camper at Notre Dame. How does Speer think he performed? "I think I did pretty well on the field" Speer said. "I measured 6'3 270lbs. I was the fastest lineman there too. My 40 time was 5.04 and I had a 29 inch vertical. What I was impressed with the most was that I was perfect on 1 on 1 drills." What about off the field? "I really enjoyed the Notre Dame campus. It was beautiful. Plus I got a chance to bond with all the other lineman. We had a great time. Plus, being on that campus, and seeing all that history and tradition is special. Not everyone can say they have been to Notre Dame, I can" Speer said.
Speer appeared to have a great trip to Notre Dame. Did the coaches offer? "No, they didn't offer me a scholarship" said Speer. So where does that leave the Irish? "They're still in my top 5 along with UCLA, Oregon, Oregon State, and Boston College" he continued.
When will Speer make a decision? "I want to decide before my season starts. I'm going to UCLA on Tuesday to tour the campus, and talk with the coaches. I may commit to UCLA then." What about Notre Dame? Will he talk to the Irish coaches before he makes a decision? "My father and I have been trying to reach the Irish coaching staff for a couple of days now. The coaches are out of town though. I'm going to try to talk to the Notre Dame coaches before I decide, but I may not get a chance."
Comments: It's obvious that Speer wants to go to Notre Dame. When I called, his father told me to call back before he realized I was calling from a Notre Dame website. He immediately put his son on the phone even though he was eating. The entire time Speer and I talked, he had a mouth full of hamburger (which made me run out and get a burger after I got off the phone with him)
Speer is looking for an offer from Notre Dame. He seemed really disappointed that he left South Bend without one. If UCLA offers on Tuesday, expect Speer to commit unless he gets in touch with the Notre Dame coaching staff, and they persuade him to wait a while. Grades aren't the issue here since Speer has a 3.5 GPA, and 1100 SAT score. If Ty and Co. want Speer, they have to talk to him before Tuesday.
