IE Quick Take: Justin Brent

Notre Dame added its second pledge to the 2014 recruiting class in wide receiver Justin Brent. recruiting analyst Dave Berk gives his initial take on Brent.

The early verbal pledge of Speedway (IN) wide receiver Justin Brent shows how much faster the recruiting process is moving in college football. Brent, who didn't waste time looking at other programs once offered by the Irish, has a solid skill set and could prove to be a major playmaker in the years to come.

Here is a quick take on the newest member of Notre Dame's 2014 recruiting class.

The first thing that stands out with Brent is his physical size and ability to go up and catch the ball in the air with great body control. Irish fans have been blessed to watch Michael Floyd the past four seasons and Brent fits the same mold of the Irish standout.

Have the Irish moved too soon on a player as raw as Brent? While Brent has great physical gifts, he's still a raw receiver as he continues to become more of a football player and not a two-sport athlete/basketball player. Top line speed is still a question that will only be answered over the next two years.

Notre Dame getting on Brent early looks like a great move as he showed well during the Nike Camp he attended in early June. All the tools are there for Brent to develop into a top perimeter receiver capable of making big plays especially in the red zone. Another positive regarding Brent is his obvious understanding of Notre Dame and his desire to be part of the overall experience of being a student athlete. Top Stories
