Cooper Gives Latest On Irish

IrishEyes.com checked with Chicago (Ill.) Julian defensive end Demetrius Cooper earlier this month. As July comes to a close and the Irish prepare for August training camp, we checked back with Cooper for an update on his Irish status.

As the clock ticks down to the start of his senior year, Chicago (Ill.) Julian defensive end Demetrius Cooper still has Notre Dame high on his list of schools. The Irish, however, landed an impressive haul this summer at one of Cooper's projected positions.

"I know Notre Dame has received about three or four commits at my position," said Cooper. "Just because they have all these commits doesn't mean they will take my interest off.

"It has been awhile since I spoke with a coach from Notre Dame, but I hope to talk with them soon."

Cooper isn't giving up hope because of his work with Irish defensive line coach Mike Elston and how the Irish explained he could possibly fit into their defense.

"Their defensive ends are like linebackers that come up to the line of scrimmage," explained Cooper. "That is the position I play in high school, as I sometime have my hand down in the dirt and sometimes I'm in a two-point stand and I jump back into coverage.

"That's why I'm looking at them so hard, because that is something I would like to do in college. Notre Dame has the right coaches and the right players, and now it's a matter of seeing if I still fit."

While unsure of his chances with the Irish, Cooper is holding out hope, but knows he might have to look at others who've taken interest.
