It hasn't kept a dozen schools from extending offers, Hilliman said, and it isn't keeping Notre Dame from showing a lot of interest in the 5-foot-11, 195-pounder.
"I'm hearing a lot of things from Notre Dame," Hilliman said. "They pretty much want me to go visit, see the school and see them. I'm pretty sure if I get that done, I'll get an offer."
However, getting to the school could take some time, which means an offer could be months from happening.
"They want me to see the school, meet the coaches and see some of the players," Hilliman said. "It (will be hard) during the season because my devotion is to my team and winning a state championship and bettering myself."
Hilliman is a downhill runner who gets up the field quickly and is difficult to bring down 1-on-1 in the high school game. And while he doesn't have 4.4 speed, he does have enough speed to get to the outside and he also is a good receiver.
In Thursday's scrimmage against Pope John XXIII (Sparta, N.J.), Hilliman had several big runs, including an 80-yard touchdown, and showed good patience waiting for plays to develop.
As a sophomore, he rushed for 426 yards and four touchdowns on 58 carries while playing a backup role. With the graduation of Jared Crayton, who was the primary running back last season, Hilliman is primed to carry the ball behind a strong offensive line and become the next highly coveted player out of the North Jersey power.
"It's very exciting," he said. "I've been thinking about it for a while. I've been watching great running backs like Savon Huggins, Jared Crayton, Sheldon Royster …all the great running backs that came before me and just watching how they had success and putting my little spin to it to make he as successful as possible."
"Those schools, especially the tradition they have, they stand out to me," he said. "During the school year (but after the season) I'll take a few visits to some colleges and get out there and see them. I know I'll be going to Boston College. I'll try to get out to Michigan, I'll try to go out to Wisconsin, and I'll try to see Miami.
"I'll try to go out to Notre Dame as well because they've been talking to me about it for quite some time."
