Brannan Southerland didn't expect all the attention. He also didn't expect that he would have to choose. The 6-2, 221-pound fullback prospect plays both fullback and linebacker for Greater Atlanta Christian School. He rushed for 600 yards and 10 TDs. He also had a receiving touchdown and recorded 147 tackles from his linebacker position.
A lot of schools have offered Southerland but can't seem to come to a consensus about his best position. "Most are saying either fullback or linebacker. Some are just saying linebacker and one is recruiting me just as a fullback."
The one school that wants him strictly as a fullback is Notre Dame. "They said strictly fullback. I don't know which I prefer. I never thought any of this was going to happen and I didn't think I would have to choose a position. It's a good problem to have though."
Southerland has some impressive offers from some of the largest hitters in college football. "Florida State, Florida, Auburn, Georgia, Alabama, Wake Forrest, North Carolina, Duke, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Notre Dame."
The Irish have offered him in writing. "They told me in May over the phone that they were offering me but the official offer didn't come until July."
Southerland has started to narrow his list down. "I have a top six right now. Florida State, Florida, Auburn, Georgia, Notre Dame and North Carolina are my top schools."
His list includes five southern schools and Notre Dame. It appears that Southerland would like to stay close to home. "I would like to stay close to home but Notre Dame is Notre Dame. It's a great education. They have more football tradition than anyone. Notre Dame just has more to offer than any school so distance wouldn't be a problem if I went to Notre Dame."
Southerland grew up cheering for the Dawgs and has been to Georgia before. "I loved Coach Richt. He's a great guy and Coach Bobo is a great guy. He is really funny and I like it there."
Southerland has a plan for making his decision. "I've been to Georgia, Florida State, Florida and Auburn already. I haven't been to Notre Dame and I know I will take a visit to Notre Dame and North Carolina before I decide. I have two off weeks during the season and I'm going to try to schedule my official visit to Notre Dame during one of those weeks. I hope to make my decision early, the sooner the better."
Comments. Southerland is a great kid and would fit in very well at Notre Dame. The official visit will be the deciding factor. He seems very interested in Notre Dame but the lure of staying close to hom also looms large. This will boil down to an official visit. I do believe he will really like Notre Dame once he visits.
