IE Quick Take: Jimmy Byrne

Notre Dame added its fourth pledge to the 2014 recruiting class in offensive lineman Jimmy Byrne. recruiting analyst Dave Berk gives his initial take on Byrne.

Brian Kelly continues to rev up Notre Dame's recruiting efforts as well as build great strength in both numbers and size along the offensive line with another early pledge for the class of 2014, Cleveland (OH) St. Ignatius offensive lineman Jimmy Byrne.

Here is a quick take on the newest member of Notre Dame's 2014 recruiting class.

Byrne plays tackle at one of the top high school football program in the country and has been tested against some great talent during his career. A play to the whistle type of player, Byrne does a great job of getting off the line as a run blocker and is able to leverage a defender, roll his hips and drive his feet through a defender to the finish. While Byrne will need to continue adding physical strength he shows great bend from the knees and is able to maintain leverage and balance throughout his block. Byrne is solid in pass protection using his quick feet.

Byrne is coming off an injury that slowed the start of his junior season but looked to have recovered fully. Taking early pledges from offensive linemen can be tricky as some of these prospects are still players in development stages. However, Byrne receives excellent coaching and will enter his senior season well tested against a tough schedule. The biggest concern Irish fans will have with Byrne is the fact he favored Ohio State early and Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer has shown his willingness to fight for the players he wants until signing day.

This is another huge early pledge received Brian Kelly and his staff as they take away one of Ohio's top prospects who held an offer from Ohio State. Byrne shows all the skill you want from an offensive lineman and has a huge upside as he continues to grow physically. We project Byrne to be redshirt for the 2014 season before battling for a spot in the Irish offensive line rotation in 2015. Top Stories
