Irish Hoops Gets Big Man

Irish basketball coach Mike Brey, looking for a big man, gets a nice commitment from Rick Cornett, who averaged 21 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks last season at Homewood (Illinois) Christian Academy.

Cornett To Notre Dame

Rick Cornett, a 6-8 PF from Homewood (IL) Homewood Christian, committed to Notre Dame over the weekend.

"They were the second school to send me a letter ever," Cornett said. "Akron was the first and then Notre Dame. That's been the place I've felt most comfortable with. I can't go wrong with Notre Dame."

Last season, Cornett averaged 21 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks. He's shown improvement throughout the course of the spring and summer and his 15 rebounds – 6 offensive – in the national title game are an indication of the kind of talent he has.

"[Mike Brey's] a great guy," Cornett said. "We've developed a relationship and recently he's been calling me. Coach Brey and I have developed our own relationship. Even if the coach were to leave the school, I would still feel comfortable at Notre Dame. It's a burden that has been lifted."

Kansas State, Illinois and Southern Cal were the other finalists and each of the three had offered.

"After I [committed] I was in shock I couldn't believe I had done it." Notre Dame still has three scholarships remaining and intends on signing on at least one more frontline player.

Some of the candidates are Sean May, James Augustine, Torin Francis, Kyle Wilson, Bernard Cote and Stanley Gaines.

The Irish need to beef up their frontcourt as they recently lost All-American Troy Murphy and will lose Ryan Humphrey and Harold Swanigan this coming season.
