Lockett on Irish offer

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei CB Jonathan Lockett has seen the ball get rolling on his recruitment after picking up a Notre Dame offer. He discusses a Notre Dame visit, very specific criteria he wants to find in a school, and the big time programs that are close to offering.

Cornerback Jonathan Lockett of Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei said the Notre Dame offer caught him a little off guard.

"I was really surprised," Lockett said. "We were keeping in touch on Facebook, but this week my coach said to call Notre Dame. I called, and they asked me different questions, and at the end, they offered me a scholarship. They like that I am tall and speedy, and that I can help up front with the run game."

Before Notre Dame extended an offer, Lockett held offers from Washington, San Jose State, and Boise State, but Lockett says things are different after the Irish offer.

"Notre Dame is setting things off," Lockett said. "Oregon offered yesterday, and Arizona State told me to call them today, and I think it's going to be an offer. USC is supposed to let me know today where I stand on their board."

Lockett isn't naming any standouts, but the 5-foot-11, 170-pound cornerback isn't hesitant about emphasizing how important the atmosphere of a school will play into his decision.

"I don't have any favorites right now, but I will narrow my list this summer," he said. "Where I feel most comfortable is going to be the biggest factor. Location doesn't matter if I feel that a school is recruiting me really hard and provides a good opportunity. Early playing time isn't going to be a factor either. It doesn't matter if a school has 15 corners if I'm comfortable there."

So far, Lockett has been to Washington and USC junior days, and he hopes to visit Notre Dame sometime before his senior season starts.

"I was talking with my parents last night, and we are planning either a spring trip to Notre Dame or a summer trip out there," Lockett said.

Lockett says though he's never been to Notre Dame himself, he has a supporting cast around him helping to fill him in on what the Irish have to offer.

"One of my teammates, [tight end] Thomas Duarte, who is committed to UCLA, was being recruited by Notre Dame," Lockett said. "He's telling me good things about their campus and coaches. There's also a good amount of Notre Dame alumni out here who are telling me about it, too. I'm definitely interested."

Decision timeline?

"I will probably take at least a few of my official visits before I decide on a school," Lockett said.

Lockett is a four-star prospect and ranked as the No. 17 cornerback in 2014.
