IE Quick Take: Nic Weishar

Notre Dame added its seventh pledge to the 2014 recruiting class Tuesday night with tight end Nic Weishar. recruiting analyst Dave Berk gives his initial take on the three-star tight end from Chicago (Ill.) Marist High School.

As Notre Dame fans have seen over the past three seasons, the need for a pass-catching tight end who can stretch the field is a must in Brian Kelly's offensive scheme. With the departure of Tyler Eifert the Irish have found another high-level prospect at the position in FOX Sports NEXT three-star recruit Nic Weishar. Here is a quick review of the newest member of Notre Dame's 2014 recruiting class.

The first thing about Weishar that stands out is his physical size, a reported 6-foot-5, 235-pounds. Looking back over the course of coverage on Weishar we can see he's continuing to grow physically and should be able to add additional weight and strength.

Much like Eifert, Weishar is able to catch the ball at its highest point and does a great job of getting his body in position to make the catch and gain positive yards thereafter. More of a receiver than tight end at this time, Weishar has great upside as he fine tunes his skill set.

Some will question the three-star ranking but keep in mind that Eifert also entered with the same ranking. The biggest area of concern will come from the future development as a complete tight end, adding the much needed power blocking skills required to play at a higher level. The tools are there its now just a matter of putting in the extra work and having the desire to mix it up.

I've only watched Weishar on film but see the skill set the Irish look for out of the position. With the ability to run solid routes and create separation, Weishar has the makings of a high level pass catcher with the physical size to become a solid blocker when called upon. This commitment continues the Irish ability to bring in high level players to a position that has proven important over the past several years. Top Stories
