Notre Dame lands combo kicker/punter
Notre Dame landed a commitment from a combo kicker/punter in the 2014 class after Tyler Newsome of Carrollton (Ga.) High wasted little time pondering his latest offer. Newsome was offered by Notre Dame on Thursday after camp. He also held an offer from Air Force. Punting is the strength of 6-foot-3,190-pound Newsome, but he's also expected to compete for kickoff duties. Newsome learned under Chris Sailer, a former two-time consensus All-American place-kicker/punter at UCLA who signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 1999. Notre Dame's projected depth at kicker for the 2013 season includes returning junior starter Kyle Brindza, former program record-holder and 5th-year senior Nick Tausch, and preferred walk-on freshman John Chereson. At punter, the Irish will have plenty of depth featuring junior kicker Kyle Brindza, 5th-year senior transfer Alex Wulfeck and freshman preferred walk-on Andrew Antognoli. 5th-year senior kicker Nick Tausch could punt in a pinch and senior walk-on Jude Rhodes is also available.
