In the first of its series for the 2014 recruiting class, Irish four-star wide receiver commit Justin Brent of Speedway (Ind.) High is broken down with a recruitment recap, analysis, and ranking summary. An early enrollee, Brent will vie for early playing time in 2014.
Justin Brent (Wide receiver, 6'1 1/2", 195)
Speedway (Ind.) High
No. 64 overall player, No. 11 wide receiver, Four-star
Brent became Notre Dame
's second pledge in the class of 2014 (Greer Martini
was first) when he committed to Notre Dame in July of 2012 as a rising junior. The in-state wide receiver earned an offer from the Irish after an impressive showing at Notre Dame's summer camp, and Brent told Scout.com after camp: "They (Notre Dame) said there was nothing they didn't like about me."
Brent had generated interest from Michigan and Ohio State, but Notre Dame was his only offer at the time of his commitment. Brent's label soared from potential in-state sleeper to concrete four-star prospect & top 15 wide receiver when he excelled in one-on-one drills at The Opening last summer. That No. 15 ranking moved to No. 11 when Brent put up gaudy numbers for much his senior season at Speedway (playing running back).
During Notre Dame's 2013 regular season, he was a sturdy fixture on the sidelines, attending every home game. Brent received an Under Armour All-America invite but did not attend. He is one of two early enrollees (Andrew Trumbetti
) for the Irish, and stepped on campus as a student on Jan. 12. Brent was recruited by Mike Elston.
"I wanted nothing to do with football. As a freshman, I was set on playing basketball in college. I even threw away the first letter I got for football from Texas A&M. I didn't even open it. Then, I got to be (taller) and started reevaluating my options. I could either be a 6'2" wide receiver or I could be a 6'2" point guard that's not lightning quick. From then on during my sophomore year, I made football my No. 1 priority." – Brent
