All Irish: Greer Martini

In the third of its series for the 2014 recruiting class, Irish four-star linebacker commit Greer Martini is broken down with a recruitment recap, prospect analysis, and more. Martini was Notre Dame's first commitment in this class, accomplishing a rarity, earning a Notre Dame offer before his junior year.

Greer Martini (Middle Linebacker 6'3", 230)

Location: Woodberry Forest (Va.) High

Rank: No. 31 outside linebacker, Four-star

Quick Hit:

Martini became Notre Dame's first commitment in the 2014 class, and has been solid ever since. He earned an offer after an impressive outing at Notre Dame's camp the summer before his junior year. Martini wasted no time contemplating his options, and gave his verbal to the Irish shortly thereafter. He held offers from Maryland, North Carolina State and William and Mary at the time of his commitment.

Martini cited his close relationship with former Woodberry teammate and current Notre Dame wide receiver C.J. Prosise as a major reason for his comfort level in giving an early pledge to Notre Dame. Martini was recruited primarily to fill the role of downhill run-stopper at Notre Dame. He was named as one of the top five linebackers at the Washington, D.C. NFTC in April 2013 by Scout.com. Bottom line: Martini is no doubt a "RKG" and though not as highly touted as some of Notre Dame's other commitments in the class, Martini has the potential to be a solid contributor at Notre Dame. East coast analyst Michael Clark had this to say of Martini:

"Martini has a great frame and is a good athlete. He understands how to play linebacker and does a nice job of putting himself in position to make plays. He took good angles in one-on-ones when pursuing the football and was also solid is pass coverage. Martini is not flashy, but gets the job done. He has all the tools to be a very good player when he gets to South Bend."

During Notre Dame's 2013 regular season, Martini took his official visit to Notre Dame on Oct. 19 for the Irish's win over USC. Martini was recruited by Scott Booker.

Notable Quotable:

"I think he's going to be a 6-3, 240-pound linebacker that plays sideline-to-sideline. I've been a head coach for 18 years and he's certainly the best inside linebacker I've ever had. This kid has unbelievable ball skills, really athletic, really loose with his hips and he doesn't have a whisker on his face yet." – Clint Alexander, Woodberry Forest coach

"I teased him the other day and said, ‘Now, we have to get Jack Lambert style. We have to get you a little more nasty. He's just a great kid, a great leader, a 4.0 (GPA) guy, and he's real humble. He's gotta be the mean kid in the sandbox this year. I think he's the kid that would hand you the shovel and the scoop." – Alexander
