In the fifth of its series for the 2014 recruiting class, Irish four-star offensive guard commit Jimmy Byrne of Cleveland (Ohio) St. Ignatius is broken down with a recruitment recap, prospect analysis, and more.
Jimmy Byrne (Offensive Guard 6'4", 290)
Cleveland (Ohio) St. Ignatius
Rank: No. 12 offensive guard, No. 211 overall, Four-star
Byrne grew up a self-admitted Ohio State, and when Urban Meyer extended an offer to Byrne in January of his sophomore year, most bets were placed that Byrne would end up a Buckeye shortly thereafter. In fact, that was Byrne's very first offer.
However, Byrne expressed interest in the Irish from day one of his recruitment, and he picked up his second offer from Notre Dame
in June before his junior year. At that point, Byrne had only played four varsity games.
Entering his junior year, Byrne had a top three of Michigan (no offer), Notre Dame and Ohio State. Byrne visited Notre Dame in late September for a home game, and from that point on, Notre Dame was the unquestioned leader. His relationship with Notre Dame offensive line coach Harry Hiestand took a giant leap forward.
Byrne visited Ohio State in November, but nothing topped Notre Dame for him, and he committed to the Irish in December of his junior year.
Byrne has unquestioned athleticism and natural instincts, especially in pass protection. Once he adds more upper body strength, he'll be a key contributor on the line for the Irish.
"The one thing I noticed was even during warm-ups coach Hiestand was still correcting their technique and staff like that. This is one of the reasons I've said that I've been impressed with coach Hiestand and how he's a teacher. Here they are trying to prepare for a game and he's still correcting their techniques. That's the type of coach I want to play for." – Byrne
"I'm looking for a good football program and a good school," said Byrne. "St. Ignatius is a school that has shown me how an education can really help the rest of my life, so I'm looking for a good education when I go to the next level too."
