In the 13th of its series, Notre Dame cornerback commit Nick Watkins of Dallas (Texas) Bishop Dunne is broken down with a recruitment recap and player analysis.
Dallas (Texas) Bishop Dunne
Rank: No. 20 cornerback, Four-star
was a favorite to land Nick Watkins, a two-way athlete in high school, from the onset of Watkins' recruitment – a recruitment that blew up after Watkins' stellar sophomore year. By May of that year, Watkins already had offers from programs like Alabama, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Ohio State and Oklahoma.
Watkins visited Notre Dame in April of 2013 for an Irish spring practice and he also visited SMU twice during that spring. He admitted to almost committing on the spot during the Irish visit, but after talking it over with his parents, he was advised not to rush the recruiting process.
By July of 2013, Watkins had decided to official visits to Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oregon and UCLA. Watkins took his first official to Notre Dame for the USC game, and subsequently, that was Watkins' first and only official visit. He committed to the Irish less than two weeks later.
Watkins chose Notre Dame primarily because of his relationship with cornerbacks coach Kerry Cooks as well as Notre Dame's No. 1 business school ranking, both of which he emphasized often during the recruiting process.
Watkins is a finesse corner, with outstanding ball skills and elite speed in coverage. He'll need to improve on his physicality to become the complete package at the position in college. Watkins played in the 2014 Under Armour All-America Game.
"Winning is definitely a big deal for me. Everybody wants the chance to play for a national championship. They're going to the playoff system next year and every team will be fighting for one of those four slots. It's going to give everyone a chance to win the national championship now." – Watkins
