Notre Dame would like to sign two defensive ends in this class, though depending on the number and skill set of the outside linebackers (i.e. Porter Gustin) who ink with the Irish, this class could survive with adding only one true defensive end.
In order of prospects' ranking:
1. Keisean Lucier-South (Orange County, Calif., Lutheran) - Lucier-South has already scheduled an official visit to Notre Dame for when Stanford comes to town on Oct. 4. He has one other official scheduled so far, and that's to Michigan the week after he visits Notre Dame. The Irish are currently in Lucier-South's "top 17," though a safe bet would have the Irish in his top five. UCLA and USC will figure to provide competition. LSU, Tennessee and Texas are also heavily in the mix.
2. Jashon Cornell (Saint Paul, Minn., Cretin Derham Hall) - Cornell named Michigan State his leader following the spring. But, I believe Notre Dame is just inches behind State, if it's not tied at this point. Cornell plans to announce his final decision on Aug. 28. He was recently offered by Alabama, though the Tide are unlikely to edge the Spartans or Irish. He has not visits currently scheduled, and the last time Cornell visited Notre Dame was last October for the USC game. He was unable to make it to campus the weekend of the spring game due to the timing of the NFTC in Chicago.3. Dre'Mont Jones (Cleveland, Ohio, St. Ignatius) - In late April, Jones named a top three of Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State. Jones said he's eyeing a mid-summer decision, so a Notre Dame visit is likely in June, though no set date has been etched in stone. He has already visited Michigan and Ohio State, and the Buckeyes could be too tough to overcome in the end.
4. Austin Bryant (Thomasville, Ga., Thomas County Central) - Notre Dame is in Bryant's top 10, and he's visiting for Irish Invasion this summer. He's taken visits so far to Florida, Florida State and Clemson. Bryant tweeted that he has a leader, but he isn't announcing who it is publicly. A summer decision is possible for Bryant.
5. Andrew Butcher (Alpharetta, Ga., HIgh) - A Tennessee commit, Butcher was offered this spring, and should he decide to open things up at any point, Notre Dame could get a look, though he seems to still be solid to the Vols at this point. He could project as an outside linebacker.
Other notable offers: CeCe Jefferson, Josh Sweat, Byron Cowart, James Lockhart, Natrez Patrick (Georgia commit), Hjalte Froholdt (Arkansas commit), Chauncey Rivers (Georgia commit), Darian Roseboro, Darrell Taylor, Michael Barnett, Charles Omenihu, Louis Brown (Baylor commit), Scott Patchan (Miami commit)Click here to view the others positions broken down thus far for May (RB, WR, TE, DT).
