Big Board: Quarterback

A look into Notre Dame's quarterback outlook in the 2015 class... Will the Irish sign a signal-caller? Plus, a breakdown of the early top targets in the 2016 class

The latest surrounding 2015 quarterback target Deondre Francois is he plans to announce his decision before August's arrival, and Notre Dame is out of the picture. After stating at The Opening that he planned to visit Notre Dame before making a final decision, that no longer appears to be the case. Florida State is in the best position to land the Florida signal-caller.

Though Notre Dame was a long shot for Francois' college destination in the short period of time the Irish recruited him, he appeared to be Notre Dame's most likely candidate for quarterback in the weeks following Blake Barnett's decommitment. Now, the Irish must decide whether to pursue a quarterback in the 2015 class or focus most of their energy on securing an elite quarterback in the 2016 class. The latter seems more likely at this point in the game, though it's not out of the question something (or someone) could pop this season.

With that being said, here's a look at where Notre Dame stands with quarterbacks in 2016.

Jawon Pass (Columbus, Ga., Carver) - Pass visited Notre Dame for Irish Invasion in June... Named Notre Dame to his top group when he was offered in the spring... Auburn and Texas A&M also in good position early, though he doesn't plan on making a decision soon

Malik Henry (Westlake Village, Calif., High) - Henry visited for Irish Invasion in June... It's still early for Henry, who has taken visits to Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Florida State, Tennessee and Texas A&M this summer

Dwayne Haskins (Potomac, Md., Bullis) - Haskins visited Notre Dame in June... Maryland and Ohio State are the leaders in his recruitment

Xavier Gaines (Frostproof, Fla., Lake Wales) - Gaines is high on the Irish though he has yet to visit... Also in the mix are Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, and Ohio State

K.J. Costello (Santa Margarita, Calif., Catholic) - Costello doesn't hold an Irish offer yet, but it would be surprising if that doesn't change with a solid season this year as the interest is there on both sides

Jacob Eason (Lake Stevens, Wa., High) - Eason, an Irish legacy, committed to Georgia over the weekend... Expect Notre Dame to stay in touch throughout his junior season

Shea Patterson (Shreveport, La., Calvary Baptist) - Patterson recently told - "I am definitely committed to Arizona but I am open to looking around..." Expect the Irish to get a visit and emerge as a legit contender for his services before it's all said and done
