Irish in top five for Pflueger

With a September decision, four-star shooting guard Rex Pflueger of Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei has the Irish in his top five.

Shooting guard Rex Pflueger recently named a top five of California, Notre Dame, San Diego State, Texas A&M and Washington State.

"Notre Dame made the list because I think I can fit in really well in Coach (Mike) Brey's system," Pflueger said. "He's a great guy and I talk with him a lot. Plus, Notre Dame has a great academics."

"I think I could come in and make an impact right away," Pflueger added. "Notre Dame runs a very unselfish system and that's where I think I'd flourish."

Pflueger will visit Notre Dame for the first time on an official visit the weekend of Sept. 6.

"I'm really excited to see Notre Dame," Pflueger said. "I know it's a beautiful campus. I will probably announce my final decision by the end of September, and I will have visited all of the schools in my top five by then."

For the 6-foot-6, 185-pound shooting guard, early playing time will be something that weighs heavily in his mind.

"I want a school that will allow me to go in right away and make an impact," he said. "That's the biggest factor for me right now. As long as it's the right fit, distance will not matter."

Pflueger's game is highlighted by his versatility in a variety of roles on the court.

"Not really anything specific, but just everything in general," Pflueger said. "Ball handling, defense, getting my strength up. I would say the strength of my game is that I do a little bit everything well. I'm capable of playing good defense, scoring, showing good leadership and making the extra pass to find the open man."

Pflueger said following his commitment, his sole focus will be on winning his fourth consecutive state championship with Mater Dei.

"It should be another good season," Pflueger said. "I'm excited to see where I end up at school and then go from there." Top Stories
