Irish set to host top 10 safety

The Irish are set to host on an official visit San Diego native and top 10 safety prospect in the class of 2015 on Saturday.

Making his first trip to South Bend on Saturday will be four-star safety Frank Buncom of San Diego (Calif.) St. Augustine. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound defensive back released a top five of Duke, Oklahoma, Stanford, UCLA and Vanderbilt in July, but Notre Dame has willed itself into contention with a strong start to its season and an offer that was extended in mid-September.

"I've heard a lot of talk about how Notre Dame has a different type of campus environment compared to other colleges around the country," Buncom said. "So, I'm excited to be on campus and experience everything. Notre Dame snuck up on my list recently, so you could say I have a top six. The coaches have made it very clear that they want me to play safety for them."

Notre Dame takes on Stanford on Saturday, and the Cardinal sit in high standing with Buncom, who has visited Stanford three times already. He plans to return in January for his official visit.

"That's more speculation per say about (Stanford) leading, but they are definitely up there right now for me because of the level of football that they are playing right now and their level of academics," Buncom said. "It's similar to Notre Dame that way. People have joked with me that I should commit to whatever school wins this game."

Buncom will dial in on one major factor as he begins to take his official visits and further the decision-making process.

"It's going to come down to how I feel around the players and the atmosphere," Buncom said. "The schools on my list are good academically, and you want great coaches, but more importantly, I want to be somewhere that I can be excited about being regardless of who is coaching. Coaches leave for the NFL or go onto the next college, so it's all about the environment of the school for me."

Currently, Notre Dame is the only planned official visit on Buncom's list.

"That's the only one I have right now, but soon I will begin planning trips to Vanderbilt and Oklahoma," he said. "Right now, I'm looking at deciding on signing day, but it will definitely be after the season."

Buncom is a four-star prospect and is ranked as the No. 8 safety in the class of 2015. Top Stories
