Decision preview: Te'Von Coney
Logistics: Notre Dame three-star linebacker target Te'Von Coney of Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) High will announce his commitment tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 23 at 9 a.m. at his high school. Scout.com will have field reporter Amy Campbell on hand for complete coverage of his announcement. Finalists include: Florida, Miami, and Notre Dame The lowdown: This one comes down to the Gators and the Irish. It's been my belief he is most comfortable with Notre Dame - the campus, coaching staff, academics, and overall fit. It's arguable the Irish have been the program most constantly to conjure the highest level of excitement from Coney. Bottom line, though - will his perceived stronger liking for Notre Dame win out over familiarity and location? Notre Dame feels confident it will. Adding Coney would give Notre Dame an impressive linebacker corp in the 2015 class, as he would join a pair of Indiana native four-star linebackers commits, WILL linebacker Asmar Bilal and SAM linebacker Josh Barajas. Notable quotables: March 2014 (Coney names Gators leader) - "From the looks of it I think I would look good in the Gators colors because I already play in those colors for my school and it would be great for my parents. They would be able to drive up and come watch six or seven of my games. That means a lot to the family and me." April 2014 (Upon receiving Notre Dame offer) - "It's a great academic school, great legacy, great people there, great alumni. It's a great school overall and a great football program. I could see myself fitting in there. They're trying to bring great guys in with great academics. They set their standards high. They want to get back to where they were a couple of years ago when they had Manti Te'o. I watched the defense then, he was a great player. The defense was very aggressive, so I liked that." June 2014 (Coney names co-leaders of Florida and Notre Dame following first unofficial visit to Notre Dame) - "The academics are what really impress me about Notre Dame. The value of the degree means lot. I talked a lot with Coach (Bob) Elliott, Coach (Brian) VanGorder, and Coach (Tony) Alford. They were telling me how great of a fit I think that I would be at Notre Dame. They said I would have an opportunity to play early at the WILL position. I think I would in pretty well in Notre Dame's defense the way they were explaining it." July 2014 (Coney names Florida his stand-alone leader after a visit to Gainesville) - ”She (mother) loves it and is excited. It was her first visit. Florida is close to home and she come to all the home games. She is loving it, the campus, and the coaches. She thinks they are great guys.” September 2014 (Coney gives the Irish the edge over Florida following his official visit to Notre Dame) - “I’ll say Florida and Notre Dame are still about even. Notre Dame might have a little bit of an edge, but I need to go back to Florida one more time also. Notre Dame just gave me a great time and I loved the visit, so that really helped them." October 2014 - Coney takes official visit to Florida, sets announcement date, names Florida, Miami and Notre Dame as finalists
