Big Board: Safety

The stage is set for this weekend to play a hefty indicator in how Notre Dame finishes out its 2015 safety class. With new names making their way to the top of board, find out where Notre Dame stands with each.

Prospects on the board

Frank Buncom IV – Four-star, San Diego (Calif.) St. Augustine

Jan. 16 – Stanford
Jan. 23 – California

Notes: Buncom is set to announce his college decision on Jan. 28. All indications point to the Cardinal.

Arrington Farrar - Four-star, College Park (Ga.) Woodward Academy

Jan. 16 – North Carolina

Notes: Irish Illustrated subscribers can click here for the very latest on Notre Dame and this former Stanford commitment.

Gary Jennings – Three-star, Stafford (Va.) Colonial Forge

Jan. 16 – Virginia
Jan. 23 – West Virginia

Note: The Hoos’ recent hire of former Wisconsin assistant Chris Beatty, who recruited Jennings for the Badgers, could be enough to put the Cavs in the driver’s seat to land Jennings. Though the Irish now label him as athlete, Jennings’ reservations about playing defense in college do not play in Notre Dame’s favor.

Jalen Julius – Three-star, Winter Garden (Fla.) West Orange

Jan. 16 – Notre Dame
Jan. 23 – Ole Miss

Notes: Julius will accompany high school teammate and Notre Dame running back target Dexter Williams on a visit to Notre Dame this weekend. An official offer is not on the table yet from the Irish. That could change this weekend, however, especially if Notre Dame senses it could be a tipping point in landing Williams. Louisville and Ole Miss are the other primary contenders in this recruitment. Bobby Petrino is expected to visit Julius on Friday, and Hugh Freeze is expected in his home next week.

Iman Marshall – Five-star, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly

Jan. 16 – Florida State
Jan. 19 - Michigan
Jan. 23 – LSU
Jan. 30 - Oregon

Notes: Marshall is taking advantage of the recruiting process as time dwindles, but USC remains the heavy favorite.

Nathan Meadors – Four-star, San Bernardino (Calif.) San Gorgonio

Jan. 16 – Notre Dame
Jan. 30 – UCLA

Notes: This appears to be a battle between UCLA and Notre Dame, with the Irish facing an uphill battle to unseat the Bruins as his public leader.

Kameron Powell – Three-star, Upland (Calif.) High

Notes: A Washington State commit, Notre Dame approached Powell last week to assess interest. Though contact has been established between the two parties, no offer is on the table. If Notre Dame wants to get him on campus for a visit, a move in that direction will need to be made sooner than later.

Justin Reid – Three-star, Geismar (La.) Dutchtown

Jan. 16 – Stanford
Jan. 23 – Notre Dame
Jan. 31 – LSU

Notes: The Sooners are likely the team to beat, but Notre Dame will have chance to make an impression when he visits campus with his father next weekend. Kerry Cooks will make an in-home visit on Monday.

Chris Williamson  - Three-star, Gainesville (Ga.) High

Jan. 16 – North Carolina
Jan. 23 – Michigan

Notes: Williamson has picked up recent offers from Auburn, Georgia, Michigan and Notre Dame. With the plethora of new offers extended his way, there will be competition to get him on campus as available weekends are running at a premium. Georgia defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt visited his school on Thursday morning, and the Dawgs could be the team to beat.

Maintaining McKinney?

It remains in question if Notre Dame safety commit Prentice McKinney of Dallas (Texas) South Oak Cliff will sign with Notre Dame on signing day. Clearing the academic hurdle could be a tough task, though there’s no question Notre Dame is where he wants to be. Regardless if McKinney becomes Irish or not, there’s room in this class - and on the current depth chart - for Notre Dame to add at the safety position. Top Stories
