Okeke excited to land Notre Dame offer
Irish assistant coach Mike Elston visited Smyrna High School in Tennessee back in January and on Tuesday he offered the 6-foot-2, 200-pound safety.
“It’s a huge offer,” Okeke said. “I was excited. Personally, I can’t speak about that school too much but everything I hear about that school from other people they’re telling me it’s a great school. I was excited.”
Okeke and Elston talked about how the junior would fit into the Irish’s defense.
“He was just saying how they have been recruiting me and analyzing me for a couple weeks,” Okeke said. “He told me I’d be a great fit for safety.”
Okeke already has tentative plans to attend the Irish’s March 21 junior day but he knows for sure he’ll be on campus in South Bend in June.
“I’m definitely trying to get up there,” he said. “I know I already have a trip planned for the summer because my trainer is taking me and a couple other guys from Tennessee up there, so I’m definitely getting up there this summer. I’m trying to get all my junior days and visits out of the way down here in the South because it’s easier. It’s hard for me to get a ride sometimes but I already have that set up. In the summer I’m definitely taking all my far trips.”
With the offer Notre Dame has emerged as one of Okeke’s early leaders.
“With Tennessee being my first offer that’s always going to be a big one but I don’t really have a preference for staying in Tennessee. I’ve been here more whole life,” he said. “Purdue is I heard a great school, Penn State, Louisville and Pitt has been recruiting me really hard and so has Wake Forest. I’m really open right now. I’m going to try to narrow it down as soon as possible just to make the decision easier when it comes down to it. I’m trying to narrow it down.”
As a junior, Okeke recorded over 70 tackles and picked off five passes.
