Four-star ready for ND return

Four-star defensive back Donte Vaughn visited Notre Dame last month. He’ll return to South Bend this weekend.

Four-star defensive back Donte Vaughn got his first look at Notre Dame last month. He’ll return to South Bend this weekend and this time he’ll be joined by his father.

“I had already visited up there earlier in the summer but my dad wanted to visit,” said Vaughn, a 6-foot-3, 196-pound cornerback prospect from Memphis. “My dad, he thinks it’s a great school and stuff. He’s been in contact with coach (Todd) Lyght so he wants to go up there and see the school.”

Vaughn spoke with Irish assistant coach Mike Elston on Tuesday to finalize the details of the trip.

Notre Dame was one of the eight schools to make Vaughn’s first cut. The others included Auburn, LSU, Missouri, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Texas A&M.

“One thing that I really like about Notre Dame is some of the coaches that are coaching there now actually went to school there,” he said. “It’s more of a family at the school because some of the coaches went to the school.”

Vaughn has already visited Cincinnati, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and a few others. He expects to see Texas A&M later this month.

After his summer visits he should be in position to narrow his list even more.

“I’m going to narrow it down to five schools and then I’ll take an official to those five schools,” he said. “I’m going to commit on my birthday, Oct. 12.”

The official visits will help Vaughn to identify the school that best meets his needs on and off the field.

“Basically, I want a school that’s going to help me get a career after college and football,” he said. “I just want to have a school that’s going to lead me to a great career.”

Scout.com ranks Vaughn as the 18th best safety in the country but all of the schools recruiting him project him at cornerback.
