Practice Report: Aug. 13

An in-depth look at Notre Dame’s practice during Thursday’s full viewing session.

Tim Prister: Offense

• Josh Anderson, a 5-foot-9, 205-pound senior walk-on running back out of Chatsworth, Calif., was awarded a scholarship for the 2015 season, which prompted an uproar from his teammates when Brian Kelly announced it earlier today, and earned him the right to join Jaylon Smith up front in leading the pushup/jumping jack phase prior to the start of Thursday’s practice.

• Per usual, the offense opened up with the tempo/move-the-ball drill, beginning with a starting unit of Malik Zaire at quarterback, C.J. Prosise at running back (with Tarean Folston as the co-No. 1), wideouts Will Fuller, Amir Carlisle and Chris Brown, tight end Tyler Luatua, and an offensive line from right to left of Mike McGlinchey, Steve Elmer, Nick Martin, Steve Elmer and Ronnie Stanley.

Projected No. 1 tight end Durham Smythe was absent during this phase of the practice. He’s been slowed by a hamstring injury.

No. 2 unit: DeShone Kizer at quarterback, Justin Brent at running back, wideouts Corey Robinson, Corey Holmes and Torii Hunter, Jr., tight end Nic Weishar, and an offensive line from right to left of Colin McGovern, John Montelus, Sam Mustipher, Alex Bars and Hunter Bivin.

No. 3 unit: Brandon Wimbush at quarterback, Dexter Williams at running back, wideouts Miles Boykin, C.J. Sanders and Omar Hunter, tight end Chase Hounshell, and an offensive line from right to left of Mark Harrell, Sam Bush, Tristen Hoge, Jimmy Byrne and Trevor Ruhland.

• Freshman tight end Alize Jones was in jersey and cut-off uniform pants after suffering a neck injury earlier in the week.

• “Offensive analyst” Jeff Quinn – Brian Kelly’s former offensive coordinator and former head coach at Buffalo – continues to work with the tight ends, assisting tight ends coach Scott Booker.

• After working with freshman quarterback Brandon Wimbush extensively on his footwork in Culver, Brian Kelly declared him improved in that area. One of the next things Wimbush will have to work on his touch, depending upon the distance of his throws.

During a drill in which the top three quarterbacks threw hitches and shallow crossing routes to the receivers, the rookie fired shot after shot, several of which were difficult to handle.

• It was interesting to watch another one of Kelly’s analysts – former defensive backs/linebackers coach Bob Elliott – work with walk-on offensive players on the mechanics of option football in preparation for two future opponents – Georgia Tech and Navy.

Many of those walk-on players would otherwise be standing around with their position group when instead, they can fine tune some option work, which will come in handy the third week of September when the Yellow Jackets come to town.

• We saw much more of Justin Brent today than we did last Friday in Culver now that he’s spent some time acclimating to the running back position. On a day when freshman nose tackle Jerry Tillery showed himself extremely well, all it took was a brush from a penetrating Tillery to knock the ball loose from Brent’s grasp. Otherwise, Brent had a solid day.

• Mega-work on red zone offense today during two practice segments. The star the show was sophomore tight end Nic Weishar, who beat Drue Tranquill, Mykelti Williams, Avery Sebastian and Nyles Morgan in pass coverage for touchdowns. Two of those scoring tosses to Weishar came from Malik Zaire with one apiece from DeShone Kizer and Brandon Wimbush.

• Much of the offense’s red-zone success came at the expense of safety Matthias Farley and cornerback Devin Butler. Farley also had difficulty in the open field once he yielded inside position.

On the flip side, the receivers struggled against KeiVarae Russell, particularly when he was able to jam them at the goal line. When they throw the term “lockdown corner” around, it’s with players like Russell in mind.

• When the offense struggled a bit in the red zone, Kelly gave a stern lecture to the quarterbacks. “In the red zone, it opens and then it closes!” Kelly barked. “It’s got to be precision!”

• Receivers coach Mike Denbrock had his own stern warning for the receivers. “Reach down and catch the ball with your hands, receivers! Stop cradling!”

• One of the top catches of the day belonged to freshman Z receiver C.J. Sanders, who made a diving, sprawling grab deep over the middle.

• Taking a break from offense-defense, the Irish did some special teams work with punter Tyler Newsome handling most of the attempts. Kelly praised Newsome for his work in camp, indicating that he was averaging an astonishing 51 yards per attempt and more than four seconds hang time.

Returning punts for the Irish were Will Fuller and C.J. Sanders. Joining them a bit later were Shaun Crawford, C.J. Prosise, and walk-on Chris Finke, a diminutive freshman from Archbishop Alter High in Kettering, Ohio whom Kelly praised after practice. He may feel differently about it when he finds out that Finke badly botched a punt return attempt as Kelly was working with the offense.

Kelly later indicated that Amir Carlisle, C.J. Prosise, Shaun Crawford and Sanders are in the running for kick return duties. Kelly also said that freshman kicker Justin Yoon is 18-for-18 on live field-goal attempts, including 4-of-4 from 40-to-49 yards.

• Fifth-year senior center Nick Martin’s leadership came to the forefront late in the practice as the No. 1 offensive line came off the field. Martin was chewing on at least one of his line mates for making a check after Martin had established the blocking scheme.

“When I say it’s one, it’s one!” barked Martin. “You don’t change it!”

Fellow offensive lineman Ronnie Stanley took advantage of a vulnerable KeiVarae Russell in a blocking situation, cracking Russell and sending him to the ground. Late in the practice, Hunter Bivin replaced Stanley in a red-zone drill as Stanley tweaked his right knee. It did not appear to be serious.

• Around the gridiron: If it doesn’t work out for Miles Boykin at the W receiver, he could have a fine career as a pass-catching tight end. He has the frame to grow into one…Nice one-handed grab by Justin Brent from Kizer…There were a few overthrows down the middle of the field by the quarterbacks, which is a dangerous place for that to happen…As anticipated, there were plenty of Showtime employees taking the initial steps in filming “A Season With Notre Dame.”...There was another pretty good offensive player in attendance: former Ohio State/NFL great Eddie George, who remains in spectacular physical condition of 41. He conducted interviews atop the Guglielmino meeting room after practice.

Tim O'Malley: Defense

Notre Dame’s eighth practice session of Summer Camp 2015 followed its first two-a-day session Wednesday, and the effects of increased depth throughout Brian VanGorder’s still-young defense were evident throughout.

No level of the defense (D-Line, backers, secondary) was without aid from a future reserve, as a heavy defensive rotation highlighted Thursday’s session under an increasingly hot South Bend sun.

DEFENSIVE FRONT
Senior nose tackle Jarron Jones was withheld from nearly every competitive rep, ceding his spot to freshman Jerry Tillery (who showed well in scrimmage action) and sophomore Daniel Cage – the latter’s first extended appearance in front of the Irish media during the calendar year.

-- Sheldon Day and Isaac Rochell form a strong pair: Head coach Brian Kelly commented on both post-practice, noting that Day was the best player one day prior, not only for the opening session but the second half of the two-a-day as well. A “rarity” Kelly noted, as veterans often taper a bit in Session #2 to preserve wear and tear over the month-long grind.

Not Day. “He was unblockable,” Kelly said of Day’s previous outing.

He was awfully good today, too. First off the ball, penetrating, moving to defensive end on occasion while most often working from his three-technique spot.

Rochell worked inside during goal line defense. He’s likely slated for interior duty among myriad sub packages as Romeo Okwara and Andrew Trumbetti worked in congress as defensive ends today, most often during the “four-minute” drill. (Four minutes remaining, ahead by one score.) Rochell was referred to as “a beast” by his head coach post-practice.

-- Jonathan Bonner shows no ill effects from April’s turf toe surgery. He’s quick off the ball on the edge and shows quick hands, both in drills and translating individual reps to team action.

-- Today was my first field-level look at Grant Blankenship’s 273-pound frame (gained 21 pounds since spring ball). The weight and strength served him well at the point but I’m skeptical that he’s fully adjusted to the added girth. Perhaps a player that will be better in November than September, which would be welcomed on this particular edition of the Irish.

-- Jerry Tillery flashed today. A lot. The field-level vantage point can be confusing, but it appeared to be Tillery that murdered Notre Dame’s first unit offensive line on two separate snaps during one scrimmage drive. Captain Nick Martin’s reaction indicated as such, laying into right-siders Steve Elmer and Mike McGlinchey with the following: “You cannot let him do that to you! You have to (first unprintable, then inaudible). Needless to say, Martin wasn’t going to allow his troops to be beaten again.

-- If Jarron Jones is withheld Saturday and Tuesday (our next two viewing periods), I’ll officially be concerned about the inevitable domino effect up front. (But perhaps he was simply out of action because of two-a-days on Wednesday.)

-- You Heard it Here: If Sheldon Day remains upright this fall, so will Notre Dame’s rush defense. He’s the one player that can make the others better at present.

LINEBACKERS
Spent individual periods monitoring coach Mike Elston and his linebackers today. Absent from the proceedings was weak side freshman ‘backer Te’Von Coney (poked in the eye) and for part of practice, Josh Barajas (undisclosed, but minor). Barajas was part of stretching, left, and returned, jogging onto the field. That indicates standard treatment.

-- Freshman Asmar Bilal began well in a contact drill with Jaylon Smith, with Elston complimenting both on their physical contact. Bilal was regularly knocked backward by Smith when asked to act as the offensive player (they rotate offense/blocker to defense/striker). “You have to give him more, Asmar. You get knocked back every time you’re on offense.”

(Indicative of a freshman not realizing every aspect of every rep is being monitored whereas Smith goes full force at all times.)

Bilal bounced back as the defender, knocking Smith back: “Look at that power!” said Elston. “What do you bench? (inaudible answer). Use it!”

-- Nyles Morgan was asked to re-do a pair of reps because his hand placement was too far outside – the basis of the drill is to keep your hands inside upon contact. He was then corrected for running around the block of John Turner rather than engaging and shedding.

-- Joe Schmidt is corrected for use of his hands as well, eliciting this gem from Elston: “Inside Joe, inside. Little guys have to use their hands well.”

-- Moment of levity from a media perspective: As Jarrett Grace gave younger players clear instructions on how to place hands inside (and why it’s important), Grace then reps himself and Elston is less than impressed: “That was incredibly soft, Jarrett.”

-- Senior John Turner is back working with the linebackers after spending the spring at safety. Elston was on him early for giving too much ground upon contact. Turner was routinely instructed/corrected by Elston but had a good moment later in practice, breaking up a pass in 7-on-7.

-- The Irish defense repped against the option today but reporting and cameras were shut down for that particular period.

-- Jaylon Smith practices like an All-American on every rep.

DEFENSIVE BACKS
Is there a safety on the team that can cover Nic Weishar? Not that I saw, then again, Max Redfield never got the chance.

Weishar worked over, in order, Drue Tranquill, Mykelti Williams, Avery Sebastian, and later Nyles Morgan for touchdowns. (Morgan during scrimmage; the former trio during 7-on-7 goal line drills.)

-- Tranquill had a rough day in coverage overall, though he’ll rarely be tasked with one-on-one coverage assuming good health to his fellow safeties this fall.

-- When KeiVarae Russell gets his hands on you at scrimmage, and he has little green grass behind him (red zone), it is OVER.

-- From the small sample size department: Avery Sebastian might need zone coverage to show well against the pass.

-- Nice effort by Cole Luke to play the ball against Corey Holmes. He also muscled Corey Robinson out of a reception opportunity.

-- Miles Boykin wins with an inside move but not to the coach’s level of expectations. “You can’t let him muscle you with that big a--, Miles!”

-- Ashton White recovered after being cast aside at the line to make a play against Boykin. “Gotta move your feet, Ashton,” offered Lyght.

-- “Slow out of your break, you took a bad angle, and you were looking at the QB!” offered Todd Lyght to Tranquill. “You can’t do it son.”

-- Matthias Farley wins with a good jam on Torii Hunter. When Farley got his hands on a receiver early in routes today, he won. When he didn’t, it was six points. The latter includes a 7-on-7 rep by Hunter, repaying Farley for the previous defeat.

-- Welcome to college football Nick Coleman: Will Fuller runs by the freshman for a 50-yard TD beauty from Malik Zaire. Fuller was open enough that Tyler Newsome could have punted it to him.

Corey Holmes turned the trick vs. Coleman later in practice. As Coleman was removed for classmate Ashton White, Jaylon Smith came over to console/council Coleman.

-- Beaten off the line, freshman Shaun Crawford battles to break up a potential corner-route touchdown, drawing praise from Lyght, “Way not to look back in that case. You played that right.”

-- Devin Butler struggled a bit vs. Corey Holmes. Conversely, Nick Watkins had a very good practice today, breaking up multiple balls in 7-on-7 and scrimmage action. Watkins’ pass defense of a fade route to Jalen Guyton was textbook. He later intercepted corner route pass though it was a touch underthrown.

Butler was beaten on a dig route by Boykin and looked slow to recover with very little jam. Could there be some safety work in Butler’s future as younger corners continue to progress?

-- Nicco Fertitta was beaten regularly in 7-on-7 but that won’t be in his job description any time soon.

-- KeiVarae Russell records pass breakups vs. Equanimeous St. Brown and Chris Brown.

-- Shaun Crawford allows a touchdown to classmate Jalen Coleman despite solid coverage.

-- A moment of levity for all (coaches included): 10-foot ladders bookend Notre Dame’s imaginary pocket during 7-on-7 drills. When DeShone Kizer drilled one of the ladders, the entire defensive backfield yelled its standard “P-DEEEEEEEE!” (“PD” as in pass defensed).

Random observation apropos of nothing: Todd Lyght is a remarkably accurate passer when conducting 10-yard, one-on-one drills with his DBs.

From the “that probably felt good” Department: When KeiVarae Russell hesitates to fire out against a pitch play, left tackle Ronnie Stanley takes the opportunity to “gently” (he could have killed him) smack him to the turf. Russell was the only player on the ground during the semi-live drill.

Taunt of the day: When Malik Zaire is forced to take a sack (wearing a red shirt signaling no contact) during a heated four-minute drill, Max Redfield chides his classmate from 20 yards away: “He’s not open, MALIK. That’s a sack, MALIK. He wasn’t open, MALIK!”
