Practice Report: Aug. 15

Notre Dame’s depth showed again Saturday while the backup quarterback competition jumped up a notch. Get the full blow-by-blow in Irish Illustrated’s Practice Report.

Tim O'Malley: Offense

Notre Dame’s sixth practice over the last 75 hours concluded Saturday afternoon with temperatures in the low 80s and in front of the University’s faculty, staff, and families.

It was the ninth consecutive day and 11th session of training camp with much-deserved Sunday respite on the docket this weekend.

Sidelined today for the Irish offense was senior RB C.J. Prosise, out for 10 days according to head coach Brian Kelly with a hip flexor injury.

Back in pads but not involved in contact today was freshman tight end Aliz’e Jones. Also absent from the unit is projected starter Durham Smythe (hamstring). Smythe worked between fields during practice far more than at any point during our viewing period Thursday, but he doesn’t appear as close to a return as Kelly indicated 48 hours prior.

LINING THEM UP
Joining the first string offense today was sophomore tight end Tyler Luatua. The rest of the unit showed no change with Malik Zaire at the trigger, the offensive line (left to right) comprised of Ronnie Stanley, Quenton Nelson, Nick Martin, Steve Elmer, and Mike McGlinchey blocking for Tarean Folston. Folston was replaced during the starters’ Tempo drill by newly-minted scholarship runner Josh Anderson.

Amir Carlisle (slot) and Will Fuller and Chris Brown took their usual spots as the wideouts with early-camp star Nic Weishar at tight end.

-- DeShone Kizer guided the second string offense with no changes in front of him: Hunter Bivin (LT), Alex Bars (LG), Sam Mustipher (C), John Montelus (RG) and Mark Harrell (RT). Justin Brent took the field at running back, replaced mid-drive by freshman Dexter Williams while Equanimeous St. Brown, Corey Robinson, and Torii Hunter, Jr. (slot) aligned as receivers. Corey Holmes replaced St. Brown during the Tempo drill.

-- Notre Dame’s third unit showed Miles Boykin, Jalen Guyton, and C.J. Sanders (slot) as the receivers with Josh Adams in the backfield, Chase Hounshell at tight end and Brandon Wimbush at the trigger. Hounshell dropped a pass during the Tempo drill and the voice of Aliz’e Jones was the first of encouragement, “Come on 18. Come on Chase!”

The offensive front (left to right) showed Colin McGovern, walkon Sam Bush, Tristen Hoge, Jimmy Byrne and freshman Trevor Ruhland.

DOWN THE FIELD
-- Notre Dame’s collection of pass-catchers continues to impress throughout its ranks. Considering his opposition, today’s notable moment came courtesy Equanimeous St. Brown, who blew by starting corner Cole Luke with a slant-and-go for a deep touchdown. Nice toss from Malik Zaire in stride, but St. Brown was open by a country mile.

The next matchup between the two went as follows: Snap, Luke jams ESB, Luke muscles ESB, Luke manhandles ESB, incomplete pass with ESB never getting 5 yards from scrimmage. That’s what you do to a freshman that can, in the words of his head coach, “Run like a deer.”

St. Brown was corrected during drill work for not running through the ball (he paused to catch it) on a tunnel screen.

-- Chris Brown beat KeiVarae Russell off the line for a short crossing route but Russell showed remarkable burst to close ground, ready to make the hit before Brown dropped the on target pass.

-- C.J. Sanders ran by classmate Nicco Fertitta for a stutter-post touchdown. It was a hideous mismatch (that singular rep) but Fertitta responded thereafter, breaking up a corner route pass intended for Sanders and nearly intercepting (he dropped it) another. He also broke up a pass for Sanders later clearly held on the play.

-- Nickel Matthias Farley had a tough day, allowing a touchdown to Torii Hunter despite a blatant hold, then another to Hunter on their next rep as the junior murdered him with a quick in-route.

-- Jalen Guyton took Nick Watkins deep for a post-route score and Chris Brown scored a fade-route touchdown on Cole Luke despite close coverage. Guyton also scored a touchdown on Nicky Baratti in a red zone drill.

-- Corey Robinson ran a textbook comeback route against Devin Butler who fell upon his break. He later caught a fade route touchdown against Nick Watkins. Robinson left practice with an eye injury (described as “under” his eye) later in the session.

-- Nic Weishar scored three more touchdowns today, twice during live red zone action. Weishar first scored down the post against Drue Tranquill on  a throw from Wimbush during 7-on-7 action, then corralled a pair of juggling catches (the first was simply one he should have caught cleanly) for scores against Irish linebackers. On the latter, Weishar made the grab despite an initial deflection by Te’Von Coney.

Weishar uses his body expertly in short spaces. He did fail to reel in a skinny post for a score against Joe Schmidt, who stuck with the play to rip the ball free as the two crashed to the turf.

-- C.J. Sanders couldn’t reel in a diving attempt after he beat KeiVarae Russell by a half-step on an out route.

-- Miles Boykin couldn’t get to a well-thrown deep ball by Zaire, missing it by a half step because he failed to accelerate down field. It was an attempt indicative of a freshman in his sixth practice over the last four days.

-- Nice strike to Boykin by classmate Brandon Wimbush in live 7-on-7, beating fellow frosh Ashton White.

-- Good grab by Amir Carlisle on a crossing route with Shaun Crawford draped on him. It was clear the ultra-competitive Crawford wanted to sling Carlisle to the ground but he disengaged as the two battled post catch near the sidelines.

-- Great throw by Kizer down the seam to Justin Brent who had the wind knocked out of him on the grab but continued downfield. Brent was gasping for air post-play.

THE BACKFIELD
Josh Adams provided a pair of scrimmage highlights, taking one second down handoff over right guard for a (approximate) 55-yard score and later barreling over left guard/center for a third-and-goal score from the 4-yard line. It was a crucial moment for Adams who had looked slow after his initial cut on two previous handoffs.

-- Big surge by the Irish offensive line to pave a path for Adams. They did the same on a 3rd-down conversion run by Folston in close.

-- Dexter Williams continues to show good north-south instincts even on outside runs. He runs through contact better than I expected and has legitimate quickness (not just speed).

-- C.J. Sanders took a fly sweep (Jet sweep) for about 25 yards over the right side in 11-on-11 action. It wasn’t the 25-yard gain that was notable, but rather then litany of flailing defenders he left in his wake. Lotta laundry to pick up after that run, fellas.

-- Malik Zaire threw the best pass of training camp 2015 to date, rolling right (as a lefty) and firing a sideline strike to a toe-tapping Will Fuller who came across the field to help his scrambling quarterback on the play. Zaire also connected on a nice comeback route to Robinson against Nick Coleman.

-- Among Zaire’s relevant missed throws was a deep ball to an open (by a full step) St. Brown, plus a slant behind Fuller at the goal line (could have been caught). Overall some quality throws Saturday by Zaire who’s better in scrimmage situations than live 7-on-7 sessions. He has a tendency to miss high on crossing routes and it’s a virtual certainty an interception will ensue because of this in September.

LEFTOVERS
-- Work remains in his overall game, but no one looks better in a full-contact drive-blocking drill than junior guard Steve Elmer.

-- When Aliz’e Jones joined a live session early in Saturday’s practice, an unidentified defensive linemen could be heard across the field as he waited for the rep to start, “Looks like we get Aliz’e today…we get ALI-ZAAAAAY.”

Jones later donned a protective redshirt for contact 7-on-7 drills as he recovers from a neck injury.

-- Sophomore walk-on Austin Webster dusted Max Redfield on a corner route during 7-on-7 but Redfield made a remarkable recovery to deflect the on-target pass at the goal line. Webster and fellow walk-on pass-catcher Chris Finke get open a fair amount during 7-on-7. Finke secured a tough grab in 7-on-7 against Shaun Crawford today despite being held.

-- Three practice viewings in and my mind hasn’t changed: DeShone Kizer is the team’s best pure passer, at present.

-- Ronnie Stanley is going to be a great senior football player. Not a good one, a great one.

Max Being Max: After Malik Zaire had a pass broken up at scrimmage, junior Max Redfield scooped up the pigskin (as they’re instructed to do) and began taking a few steps toward the end zone. Zaire proceeded to dive on Redfield attempting to strip the ball. Redfield muscled it away, ran to the nearby goal line, then came back and placed the ball in an annoyed Zaire’s chest on his way back to the defensive huddle.

Wait, you’re allowed to return those? Tyler Newsome’s first punt traveled 60 yards in the air. Less than 10 seconds but more than three failed tacklers later, it came back 80 the other way as C.J. Sanders lit up the live Irish punt coverage unit for a crowd-pleasing score.

The play was notable for two reasons:

1. Sanders is special in space, and
2. KeiVarae Russell was one of the “Rangers” (CBs) blocking for him.

Pete sampson: Defense

Defensive Line

Jarron Jones arrived midway through practice with a soft cast on his right leg, which Brian Kelly later revealed to a be a grade three MCL injury that will require surgery next week and shelve the defensive tackle for the season.

Kelly said after practice that Jones’ injury means Jerry Tillery moves into the starting lineup, sliding over from the three technique (Sheldon Day’s position) to the one technique. Daniel Cage (one technique) will continue to work with the second team while Jay Hayes becomes the primary backup to Day. Pete Mokwuah becomes the third-team with Jacob Matuska. Elijah Taylor will get a look as well, although Kelly indicated that would be more of an emergency measure.

While we saw Isaac Rochell work some inside on Saturday, Kelly ruled that out as a permanent move. Look for Rochell to get some defensive tackle work this season based on what we’ve seen in practices, but look for that to come in pass rushing situations if it happens at all. Rochell did get some inside work on Saturday, but it was within a defensive line of Day, Romeo Okwara and Andrew Trumbetti. In other words, that’s a pass rushing set. We saw that Thursday as well.

Tilley continues to impress when turned lose to penetrate the backfield. On one snap Alex Bars was supposed to pull down the line to block off Tillery, who was simply too quick for the athletic guard. Tillery blew up the play for a loss. Seemingly every practice he makes plays in the backfield that usually only Day can make.

Jonathan Bonner flashed for me today, less so as a pass rusher than a sophomore who understands schemes and offense. On one snap DeShone Kizer tried to hit Justin Brent in the flat (Brent was at running back). Bonner saw it coming, peeled off his pass rush and made the tackle along the sideline. Andrew Trumbetti showed good instincts on another snap, diagnosing the read option scheme run by Brandon Wimbush.

Not much from Grant Blankenship today. Aside from getting juked out by C.J. Sanders in the backfield, didn’t see a whole lot from the other sophomore defensive end.

Overall, this still looks like a solid defensive line, even down Jones. And remember at this time last year, there was no certainty that Jones could hit the level he hit against Florida State, sort of like how Will Fuller wasn’t in the starting lineup when training camp opened. The point is Notre Dame will likely have a few guys make unexpected jumps at this position. The problem, as Tim O’Malley has said, is Jones was a domino guy. His loss hurts the depth at multiple positions and that could take a toll over the course the season.

Linebacker

Light day for Joe Schmidt as the coaching staff mixed the second-team linebackers into the starting defense to give Te’Von Coney, Nyles Morgan and Greer Martini more work. Coney was back in action after an eye injury kept him out on Thursday.

Spent the opening periods of practice watching Jaylon Smith work through positional drills. At this point we’ve run out of fresh adjectives to describe the junior’s athleticism. Simply put, it looks like somebody dropped an NFL linebacker into the. He’s always been built differently with his length. Now he has the strength to back it up.

Interesting to hear Smith correct other linebackers on their footwork, which is not something we’ve heard much from the All-American in the past couple years. Mike Elston stood back and listened when Smith wanted to offer technique tips. It’s a good sign for Notre Dame that Schmidt isn’t the only voice of authority at that position.

Note to the coaching staff, Schmidt doesn’t like practices where he’s not getting reps.

Jarrett Grace continues to work with the third-string defense. It’s an odd sight for the fifth-year senior because at points Saturday he was on the field with Nicco Fertitta, Mykelti Williams, Ashton White, Micah Dew-Treadway, Brandon Tiassum and Asmar Bilal at the same time. That’s not a positive indication for how close (or far) Grace is from the “varsity” defense.

Not sure about the status of Josh Barajas, who’s been in uniform for practices but doesn’t even get scrap reps within the defense. Don’t believe there’s an injury issue here, although Kelly said after practice that it's a hamstring pull that might require a couple weeks to settle down. Barajas had worked at Sam linebacker earlier in camp.

James Onwualu put on 15 pounds this off-season and he looks it when standing on the sidelines. But when Onwualu moves, there’s no obvious drop-off in his athleticism. He’s no longer “converted safety/receiver James Onwualu.” He’s just a linebacker.

Bilal has some poor’s man’s Jaylon Smith in his game, even if he’s built more like another No. 27 in Notre Dame history, David Bruton. Would be ideal for Notre Dame for Bilal to sit a season to put on weight. Not sure if Notre Dame will deactivate him from special teams, though.

Cornerback

Remember when Lo Wood tore his Achilles during training camp three years ago and it was supposed to derail Notre Dame’s season before it started? Yes, that’s applicable with the Jarron Jones news. But it’s also in stark contrast to Notre Dame’s current cornerback roster where the Irish have as much quality depth to start a season as I can remember.

It’s to the point when KeiVarae Russell doesn’t break up a pass it’s more noticeable than when we does. He worked over Corey Robinson early in practice on a go route down the sidelines, sticking with Robinson, batting down the ball and dumping the receiver. Chris Brown beat him later, but that was about it on Saturday. Kelly described Russell as an “alpha” player during the summer. Spot on.

Nice day for Devin Butler, who’s been the victim on many practice highlights this fall. Butler’s best play was a deep ball to Jalen Guyton, where the freshman got behind the junior. Butler kept fighting and ultimately wrestled it out of Guyton’s hands in the end zone. The officials ruled it incomplete.

Shaun Crawford worked with the starting defense at nickel. Kelly said after practice that Crawford could take that role from Matthias Farley, who drilled at second-team safety. While that’s hard to believe based on Farley’s wealth of knowledge, it’s also a nod to Crawford’s athleticism, which is impressive. He reminds me of Ronald Darby, just a touch shorter.

Cole Luke has to be one of college football’s better second corners. On one rep he stacked on top of Equanimeous St. Brown on a bomb from Malik Zaire. Luke read the ball as going long, so he paced himself to make sure St. Brown couldn’t get it without interfering with him. Basically, he boxed out the bigger receiver. St. Brown turned into a defensive back on the play and batted away the pass. Unclear if he’d have drawn a flag, meaning offensive pass interference.

Nick Coleman came up a bit gimpy at the end of practice, but high compete level from the freshman corner. Showed toughness on an outside run by Dexter Williams when Miles Boykin was supposed to be sealing him. Instead, Coleman got off Boykin and made the tackle.

Safety

Avery Sebastian got a lot of work with the first-team defense again, building on Thursday’s performance. However, Elijah Shumate repped plenty with the first-team defense too. It appears that the coaching staff wants to have a top four at safety of Max Redfield, Shumate, Sebastian and Farley.

Drue Traquill seems to have fallen down the pecking order early in camp and he paired with Nicky Baratti in a deeper reserve role. Based on very limited observations of Baratti, it’s difficult to know if he’s comfortable taking contact.

Redfield got juked out on a run play by former walk-on Josh Anderson.

Not sure how good Notre Dame’s safeties are in coverage based on their play against the Irish tight ends. Nic Weishar seems to have his way with that position.

He worked over Corey Robinson early in practice on a go route down the sidelines, sticking with Robinson, batting down the ball and dumping the receiver. Chris Brown beat him later, but that was about it on Saturday. Kelly described Russell as an “alpha” player during the summer. Spot on.

\r\n

Nice day for Devin Butler, who’s been the victim on many practice highlights this fall. Butler’s best play was a deep ball to Jalen Guyton, where the freshman got behind the junior. Butler kept fighting and ultimately wrestled it out of Guyton’s hands in the end zone. The officials ruled it incomplete.

\r\n

Shaun Crawford worked with the starting defense at nickel. Kelly said after practice that Crawford could take that role from Matthias Farley, who drilled at second-team safety. While that’s hard to believe based on Farley’s wealth of knowledge, it’s also a nod to Crawford’s athleticism, which is impressive. He reminds me of Ronald Darby, just a touch shorter.

\r\n

Cole Luke has to be one of college football’s better second corners. On one rep he stacked on top of Equanimeous St. Brown on a bomb from Malik Zaire. Luke read the ball as going long, so he paced himself to make sure St. Brown couldn’t get it without interfering with him. Basically, he boxed out the bigger receiver. St. Brown turned into a defensive back on the play and batted away the pass. Unclear if he’d have drawn a flag, meaning offensive pass interference.

\r\n

Nick Coleman came up a bit gimpy at the end of practice, but high compete level from the freshman corner. Showed toughness on an outside run by Dexter Williams when Miles Boykin was supposed to be sealing him. Instead, Coleman got off Boykin and made the tackle.

\r\n

Safety

\r\n

Avery Sebastian got a lot of work with the first-team defense again, building on Thursday’s performance. However, Elijah Shumate repped plenty with the first-team defense too. It appears that the coaching staff wants to have a top four at safety of Max Redfield, Shumate, Sebastian and Farley.

\r\n

Drue Traquill seems to have fallen down the pecking order early in camp and he paired with Nicky Baratti in a deeper reserve role. Based on very limited observations of Baratti, it’s difficult to know if he’s comfortable taking contact.

\r\n

Redfield got juked out on a run play by former walk-on Josh Anderson.

\r\n

Not sure how good Notre Dame’s safeties are in coverage based on their play against the Irish tight ends. Nic Weishar seems to have his way with that position.
