Big Board: Safety

Notre Dame remains in contention for several top safeties this cycle. Irish Illustrated breaks down the targets and where Notre Dame stands.

Current Outlook

When Notre Dame takes the field against UMass on Saturday, here’s how the depth chart will look:

Free safety: Max Redfield, Matthias Farley, Mykelti Williams

Strong safety: Elijah Shumate, Nicky Baratti, John Turner

Notre Dame will be without back-up free safety Drue Tranquill for the season after he tore his right ACL against Georgia Tech. Tranquill suffered a left ACL tear last year. Back-up strong safety Avery Sebastian is expected to return to the rotation within the next couple of weeks after suffering a fractured metatarsal in the Texas game.

Notre Dame will lose Farley, Sebastian and Shumate after next season as their collective eligibility runs out.

Technically, Baratti and Turner will have fifth-year options, but considering how little impact they’ve made through three seasons, it wouldn’t be a surprise if both departed.

Redfield and Tranquill will likely return as Notre Dame’s only upperclassmen safeties.

Freshman Nicco Fertitta has already seen the field on special teams. Brian Kelly said this week that freshman Mykelti Williams will get pulled up from the scout team to practice with the regular defense. He has yet to see game action.

What’s Next

Notre Dame will ideally sign four safeties this cycle. Combo safety/cornerback types are being targeted as part of this secondary class. If the Irish can find the right mix of prospects, taking five won’t be out of the question.

Notre Dame has commitments from a pair of safeties already, Jalen Elliott and Spencer Perry. Elliott committed to Notre Dame during the Irish Invasion and Perry followed shortly thereafter. Perry, however, has recently been open about taking official visits this fall. His first official could be to Clemson when the Tigers host Notre Dame on Oct. 3.

A top priority for Notre Dame at the position is Devin Studstill, who has Notre Dame out in front and will visit on Oct. 17. Another top prospect is Jordan Fuller, who has yet to trim his list. He visited Notre Dame in July and the Irish hope to get him back for an official visit.

Here’s a look at the updated Master List at safety.
