Irish offer their top ’18 quarterback target

Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Sanford attended Phil Jurkovec’s playoff game last Friday. The Irish quarterbacks coach offered the sophomore a scholarship the next day.

Notre Dame’s game at Pittsburgh last weekend let the Irish coaching staff hit several high school football games on Friday night.

Offensive coordinator Mike Sanford was at Pine Richland High School in nearby Gibsonia to watch 2018 quarterback Phil Jurkovec in action. He liked what he saw out of the 6-foot-5, 190-pound sophomore.

“Coach Sanford, he was at the game and then I called him after the Pitt-Notre Dame game on Saturday,” Jurkovec said. “He just said that he was impressed with what he saw and that they saw my film and they would like to offer me.”

The offer was the sixth for Jurkovec, who first visited Notre Dame last month for the primetime game against USC.

“I’m definitely really excited by it,” Jurkovec said. “(My family) was excited too. When we went up to the game everyone was really impressed by the university.”

Michigan State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Temple and Wisconsin also have offered.

Despite his heavy interest in Notre Dame, Jurkovec plans to take his time maneuvering through the recruiting process.

“As of now I’m just kind of taking it slow,” he said. “I would like to go and see all the schools that have offered me so far. I definitely want to be back at Notre Dame again. I don’t know when exactly right now. It’s just depending on my schedule because I’m playing basketball here and we have the playoffs. I’ll have to figure that out.”

Jurkovec doesn’t have a timeline for picking a school.

“I haven’t really thought about it that much,” he said. “I think I’d just like to go and see a lot of these different schools before I commit. When I commit I want to be sure it’s the right choice.”

On Friday, Jurkovec completed 17-of-26 passes for 279 yards in leading Pine Richland to a 42-7 win over Penn Hills in the first round of the WPIAL Quad A playoffs. He also rushed for 51 yards.

The Rams, the defending 4A champs, will play Mount Lebanon on Friday in the quarterfinals.

On the year, Jurkovec has completed 158-of-237 passes (66.7 percent) for 2,266 yards and 17 touchdowns to just three interceptions. He’s also rushed 113 times for a team-high 1,088 yards and 10 scores. He has five 100-yard rushing efforts to his credit.
