Staff Picks - Notre Dame vs. Wake Forest

Irish Illustrated’s staff gives its predictions for Saturday’s Senior Day showcase against Wake Forest

With Tim Prister’s weekly game preview still to come, the rest of the Irish Illustrated staff offers a few thoughts on Saturday’s annual Senior Day swan song.

Pete Sampson
Stop about Wake Forest’s defense being quietly efficient. Because Notre Dame’s offense, even with a limited C.J. Prosise, should blow the Demon Deacons out of the water on Senior Day. Look for Will Fuller to keep up his torrid scoring pace while Josh Adams gets into the end zone twice and the Irish produce a pick-six on defense. The Wake Forest offense won’t threaten Notre Dame’s inconsistent secondary with its two young quarterbacks.

There will be no drama in South Bend. The real intrigue about where Notre Dame’s season can go from here will be played out in the Big 12, Big 10 and SEC.

Wake Forest brings a pretty good defense and hopeless offense – neither is enough to trouble the Irish on Senior Day in South Bend. I don’t expect a name-your-score affair (a la UMass) because the Demon Deacons are catching the Irish at an opportune time, but there’s nothing to suggest head coach Dave Clawson’s crew can scare Kelly & Co. into the middle of the third quarter.

Look for a big day from the usual suspects (Will Fuller, DeShone Kizer, and whoever runs the ball), and for a heretofore inconsistent defense that will, for the first time since the season opener, hold a foe under 20 points.

Wake Forest comes into Notre Dame stadium riding a three game losing streak. While the Deacons have a decent defense their offense has been a struggle all season averaging just 18.7 points a game. No doubt that Notre Dame will send the seniors out in style. The only real question is how much of style point statement can the Irish make to impress the playoff committee.

This has blowout written all over it. Brandon Wimbush will see time, as will Dexter Williams, Equanimeous St. Brown, Te’Von Coney and Grant Blankenship. Wake Forest is among the most improved rushing attacks in the country this year, and the Deacons have sniffed success busting through on the ground for some big plays. That should provide Notre Dame with a scrimmage-like setting for teachable moments in the secondary. The defensive line and C.J. Prosise should receive some much-needed rest, and the seniors will go out in dominating fashion

Remember when Wake Forest won a game against Boston College earlier this season 3-0? No? I do. No way a team like that comes into Notre Dame Stadium and plays it close. Let's say the Irish roll up big numbers on the ground, with or without C.J. Prosise, and put this game away even earlier than expected. Should be a comfortable win on Senior Day.

Wake Forest has played a couple of good games this season, most notably a 24-16 loss to Florida State, but the Demon Deacons haven't been consistent and have given up 105 points in their three-game losing streak. The youthful Wake Forest roster is taking its lumps now but should reap the rewards in future seasons. Fortunately for the Irish, Wake Forest shouldn't stand in the way of a Senior Day win.
