Five-star linebacker Caleb Kelly of Fresno, Calif., is done taking visits, but his recruitment continues to heat up.
Kelly will announce among Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Oregon on National Signing Day during a press conference at Lincoln Elementary School, scheduled for 8:30 p.m. (eastern).
“People say that it will just be a gut feeling that you get, so I hope that’s what happens to me,” Kelly said. “Whatever I feel like is the best for me and my family, but it’s up to me. My mom is fine with all of my choices, so she just wants the best for me.”
Irish defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder visited Kelly at school on Tuesday.
“He talked to me about his coaching style and position-wise how he does things at Notre Dame,” Kelly said. “He said things could change depending on how I grow, but right now he likes me at Sam. I could develop into a defensive end. He said the defense varies a lot, so all of the players have to know every position.”
On Tuesday evening, VanGorder and Irish assistant Mike Denbrock went in-home with Kelly.
“We’ll probably just kick back and relax,” Kelly said before sitting down with the Irish assistants. “Coach (Mike) Elston came last week. And coach (Brian) Kelly comes next Tuesday.”
Kelly’s relationship with Denbrock goes back to his sophomore year.
“I probably have the best relationship with Denbrock of the Notre Dame coaches,” Kelly said. “But coach Elston has made the best push recently. They’re laidback and now what they’re talking about. Coach Denbrock is so funny. He’s always making jokes. And coach Elston, I just can relate to him well for some reason.”
Sooners’ head coach Bob Stoops has already gone in-home with Kelly.
“I love the (Oklahoma) coaches and the fans,” Kelly said. “It was my first offer and the first big school that I visited. I feel like it’s probably the reliable choice.”
Kelly hopes to have his mind made up a few days in advance of signing day.
“I hope that I know before signing day,” Kelly said. “I know that I’m not sure right now.”
