Irish add special teams analyst

Notre Dame has hired a special teams analyst with FCS experience in Marty Biagi.

On Monday morning Marty Biagi announced that he’d joined the Irish coaching staff as a special teams analyst via Twitter. Biagi spent last fall as the cornerbacks coach at South Dakota, where the staff turned over this off-season after the retirement of head coach Joe Glenn.

Biagi spent the previous three seasons at Southern University, where he served as special teams and cornerbacks coach. Biagi is a former backup kicker and punter at Marshall (2004-07).

In his final season at Southern, the Jaguars special teams accounted for four kickoff return touchdowns, two punt return touchdowns and a blocked punt returned for a touchdown. Southern totaled five blocked kicks that season.

Notre Dame hired Pryce Tracy as a special teams intern and analyst last off-season as the Irish had their best year in the kicking game under Brian Kelly.

Under special teams coach Scott Booker, freshman C.J. Sanders returned a kickoff and punt for touchdowns while Justin Yoon earned freshman All-American notice and connected on his final 12 field goal attempts.

Sanders was just the third player in school history to score on a kickoff and punt in the same season while Yoon’s field goal percentage of 88.2 percent led his class and ranked fifth nationally.
