Report: Irish hire defensive GA

Notre Dame’s next defensive graduate assistant won’t have Irish ties, although he does have connections to Brian Kelly and Brian VanGorder.

According to FootballScoop.com, Notre Dame has hired Harland Bower as its next defensive graduate assistant.

Bower would replace Maurice Crum, who took a fulltime assistant coaching position at Indiana State last month after one year back with the Irish program where he was a two-time captain. Bower doesn’t have that level of Notre Dame connections, but his playing career did overlap with both Brian Kelly and Brian VanGorder.

Bower spent last season as outside linebackers coach at Central Arkansas, which followed a fulltime assistant position at Troy coaching defensive ends. He held supporting roles at Rutgers, Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College, Murray State and Georgia Military College before that.

Bower’s connections to Kelly go back to his freshman season at Central Michigan, where he overlapped with Kelly’s second season at the MAC level. Bower then transferred to Georgia Southern, where he played three seasons and was captain as a senior in 2009.

VanGorder was the Georgia Southern head coach in 2006 before leaving for the Atlanta Falcons.
