Notre Dame hopes to flip Alabama commit

Alabama commit Xavier McKinney will visit Notre Dame in two weeks after adding an offer this week.

Notre Dame offered Alabama defensive back commitment Xavier McKinney this week, and he’s already planning a trip to South Bend.

“Actually I don’t know much about Notre Dame,” McKinney said. “I’ve watched them on TV a couple of times before, but that’s why I’m going up there March 19. I want to check it out and see what they’re all about.”

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound prospect committed to Alabama back in September. Since then, McKinney has visited Auburn, Clemson, Georgia and Florida. The Bulldogs and Gators received visits in February.

“I’m pretty solid to Alabama, but I’m still exploring my options and seeing what other schools have to offer,” McKinney said. “I love the atmosphere at Alabama. I’ve been there four times, and I’ve enjoyed it every time.”

McKinney is rated by Scout as a safety, but he’s being recruited to play multiple positions in the secondary.

“Most schools are recruiting me to play free safety, strong safety, or cornerback,” McKinney said. “They’re not getting too specific because I can play all of them.”

For now, Notre Dame is the only future visit McKinney has planned.

McKinney had 10 interceptions and returned two of those for touchdowns as a junior.
McKinney’s teammate, defensive back LeAnthony Williams, took in Notre Dame’s Junior Day in January. Williams held the Irish in his top five before committing to Clemson last month.
