Hezekiah Jones didn't let a longstanding commitment stand in the way of another opportunity.
Baylor scored a commitment from Jones, a four-star wide receiver from Stafford, Texas, last summer. Other programs have continued to pursue, including Notre Dame. Jones followed up on that interest with a visit last weekend for the Blue-Gold Game.
During that trip, the Irish staff took another step in pursuing Jones by offering.
“I wanted to be up there because that was one of the offers I was looking for,” Jones said. “It was an offer I wanted. So just to go up there and I was blessed they offered me and gave me a chance to play for their program.”
Jones spent the weekend comparing Notre Dame against Baylor and a few other programs.
He watched from the stands during the spring game along with several other visitors. Wide receivers and quarterbacks took center stage for Jones, who took mental notes on the Irish offense as it worked through the exhibition.
“I was just sitting back and watching what they did on the offensive side,” Jones said. “I was picking out what they did. I like what they did. I like that they threw the ball downfield a lot. They don’t just run gos. They run posts, outs, digs, other routes. That was big seeing that.”
Head coach Brian Kelly gave the 5-foot-11, 185-pound prospect an idea of where he might fit into that mix. The Irish staff sees Jones fitting at the same position Will Fuller vacated for the NFL Draft.
Jones thinks his speed could translate.
“(Kelly) thought I would fit in well with their program at that position,” Jones said. “They’re low at that position. They knew I had speed. They’re looking for another speed guy at that outside position.”
Kelly and the program did enough to make Jones think things over.
Other programs will get their shot at Jones as well. He plans to visit Cal and Stanford this spring and Oregon come early June. There are no visits currently set for Baylor, although Jones noted he can see that campus at just about any point as it’s much closer to home.
Jones also plans to take official visits and sees Notre Dame as a place that will get him on campus again. He could be joined by an Irish safety target.
“Most definitely I’m gonna try to get back up there one more time,” Jones said. “Maybe bring Grant Delpit with me. Just seeing what his status is.”
